Flat tyre in Cheltenham right now?
Maybe the car pulled hard to one side on the A40 near Arle Court, or you came back to a Montpellier side street to find a corner sitting on its rim, or the dashboard lit up on the way down Leckhampton Hill after dark. Ring us whichever it is. Our phone line never closes, weekends and bank holidays included, and the fitter we send arrives with a tyre and the tools to change it on the spot, so there's no need to limp to a garage.
We aim to have someone with you within 60 minutes in most cases. Race meetings, school traffic and roadworks around the Golden Valley can all slow things down, and we'll be straight with you about timing when you call.
Waiting safely on the M5, the A40 and the hill roads
Cheltenham's emergencies happen on three quite different kinds of road, and each needs its own approach:
- The M5 at junctions 10 and 11: pull onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area, turn your hazard lights on and get everyone out on the passenger side. Climb behind the safety barrier and keep well back from the traffic. If you're in an emergency area or stuck in a live lane, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000 first (or 999 if anyone is at risk). Never attempt the wheel change on a motorway. Our guide to a motorway flat goes through each step.
- The A40 dual carriageway between junction 11 and Arle Court: traffic moves quickly and there's little room. If the car still steers, slow down gradually and leave at the next roundabout or turning instead of stopping in a running lane.
- Leckhampton Hill, Cleeve Hill and the lanes on the escarpment: these are narrow, often unlit and have bends that hide a parked car. Find a gateway or a wide verge, leave the hazards on and wait away from the carriageway rather than in the car.
Replace, repair or recover
When the fitter gets to you, they check the damage and choose the right fix. A small puncture in the middle of the tread on a tyre that wasn't driven flat can often be repaired to British Standard guidance. A torn sidewall, a large cut or a tyre that has been run on the rim gets replaced there and then, with premium, mid-range and budget options all carrying the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing is free and so is taking the old tyre away.
Sometimes the car is in a place nobody can safely work, such as a tight bend on a hill or a busy slip road. In that case we can arrange breakdown recovery to move it to a safer spot first.
Before the fitter arrives: check whether your wheels have locking nuts and find the adaptor key. It usually lives in the glovebox, a door pocket or the spare wheel well. Without it, even a simple tyre change can't go ahead.
Run-flat and pressure warnings on newer cars
Plenty of cars around Cheltenham now leave the factory with run-flat tyres and no spare at all. A run-flat lets you keep going for a limited distance at reduced speed, but it isn't a fix, and once it has been driven on deflated it usually has to be replaced rather than patched. Our article on whether run-flat tyres can be repaired explains why. If the pressure light comes on, stop somewhere safe, check the tyres by eye, and give us a call before you push on to the M5.
Neighbourhoods and routes we reach
We attend call-outs across the town, from Hesters Way, Benhall and St Mark's in the west to Whaddon, Prestbury and Charlton Kings in the east, as well as Leckhampton, Warden Hill and Up Hatherley on the south side. On the road network, that takes in the M5, the A40 towards Andoversford, the A435 through Bishop's Cleeve and the A46 out through Shurdington. We also reach neighbouring places such as Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Cirencester.
The details that help us find you
- Your location: road name, junction number, the nearest roundabout, a postcode or a what3words reference.
- What's wrong: a puncture, a blowout, a visible bulge or just a warning light.
- The tyre size printed on the sidewall, such as 205/55 R16, or your registration if you can't read it.
- Whether you've managed to stop somewhere safe, and whether you have the locking nut key.
