On a flat road a part-worn tyre gets away with a lot. On a wet or frosty hill out of Stroud it doesn't. Pulling away on a slope and braking on the way down both rely on the tread biting into the surface, and in autumn there's often wet leaf mulch on the lanes as well.

It's also worth checking that the tread is wearing evenly from side to side. Constant climbing, descending and cornering can show up any alignment problem fast, and a tyre that's bald on one edge but fine on the other won't behave predictably on an icy bend.
