Hills put extra strain on tyres. Climbing a steep street makes the driven wheels work harder for grip, especially in the wet, and coming down puts more weight and braking force on the front tyres. Over time that can wear the fronts faster than the rears, and leaves little margin if the tread is already low.

In autumn, wet leaves on sloping roads make things worse. Make sure your front tyres have plenty of tread before the weather turns; many drivers choose to replace them well before they reach the 1.6 mm legal limit. Rotating front and rear tyres at service time can even out wear if your handbook allows it. When parking on a hill, turn the front wheels towards the kerb going downhill, but avoid grinding the tyre against it, as that can damage the sidewall.
