Picked Up Stones or Mud? Check the Tread
Roads through farming country carry more than traffic. Tractors and trailers drop mud, stones and the odd bit of metal, and field entrances leave gravel spread across the tarmac. Small, sharp stones can lodge between the tread blocks and, over many miles, work their way into the rubber until they cause a slow puncture.
Once a week or so, walk round the car and look closely at each tread. Flick out any wedged stones with something blunt, and keep an eye out for nails, screws or cuts. Also look at the area where the tread meets the sidewall, because driving over a broken verge edge can scuff or nick it. Any cut deep enough to show the cords underneath means the tyre needs replacing. A slow leak on a car that seems fine is often caused by something lodged in the tread, and catching it early can mean a repair instead of a new tyre.
