Stranded with a damaged tyre in Gloucester?
Perhaps a tyre burst on the M5 between junctions 11a and 12, or the car started wobbling on the A40 northern bypass, or you walked out to the drive in Quedgeley to find a wheel flat before the school run. Whatever has happened, call us. We pick up the phone at any hour on any day, and a mobile fitter comes to you with a new tyre and the equipment to fit it there and then.
Our aim is to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Distance, the time of day and the queues around the Over roundabout or the Cross Keys roundabout all play a part, so we'll give you a straight answer on timing when you ring.
Safety first on the motorway, the bypass and country roads
Before anything else, make sure you and your passengers are out of danger. What that means changes from road to road:
- On the M5 (junctions 11, 11a and 12): move to the hard shoulder or an emergency area, put the hazard lights on and get out through the left-hand doors. Wait behind the safety barrier, as far up the verge as you can. From an emergency area or a live lane, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if anyone is in immediate danger. Never change a wheel on a motorway yourself. There's more detail in our guide to a flat on the motorway.
- On the A40 and A417 around the city: if the car can still be steered, reduce speed gently and come off at the next roundabout or lay-by instead of stopping on the carriageway.
- On the lanes out towards the Forest of Dean or the Severn Vale: roads are narrow, dark at night and sometimes flooded. Stop where you can be seen from both directions, leave the hazards on and wait off the road, not inside the car.
What happens when the fitter reaches you
The fitter inspects the tyre and tells you what's possible. A small hole in the central tread, on a tyre that hasn't been driven flat, can often be repaired following British Standard guidance. A tyre with sidewall damage, a bulge or heavy wear is replaced on the spot. We stock budget, mid-range and premium tyres, all carrying the manufacturer's guarantee, and wheel balancing and disposal of the old tyre are included at no extra cost.
Where the car simply can't be worked on, for example on a narrow bridge or a busy slip road, we can call in breakdown recovery to take it somewhere safer.
Worth doing while you wait: find the locking wheel nut key if your car has one. It tends to be in the glovebox or in a small bag with the jack. The wheel can't come off without it.
Pressure warning lights and what they're telling you
A tyre pressure light doesn't always mean an instant flat. It can be a slow leak, a drop in temperature overnight, or a sensor fault. What matters is not to ignore it, especially before joining the M5. Pull over somewhere safe, look at each tyre and, if one is clearly low or you can hear a hiss, ring us rather than driving on. Our explainer on the tyre pressure warning light covers the different causes.
Parts of Gloucester we cover
We're out across the whole city, including Kingsway, Quedgeley and Tuffley in the south, Abbeydale and Hucclecote to the east, and Longlevens and Barnwood in the north. Our fitters cover the M5 at junctions 11, 11a and 12, the A40, the A417 and the A38. We also attend in nearby towns such as Cheltenham, Stroud and Tewkesbury.
When you ring, have these ready
- Your exact position: road name or number, direction of travel, junction, postcode or what3words.
- A description of the problem: a puncture, a burst tyre, a bulge or a warning on the dash.
- The tyre size off the sidewall, for example 225/50 R17, or the car's registration.
- Whether you're somewhere safe to wait for us.
