Worcester tyre emergencies, day and night

Drivers in and around Worcester can run into tyre trouble on very different roads within a few minutes of each other: the M5 at junction 6 or 7, the Southern Link across the Severn, the A449 out towards Malvern, or a back street in St John's. A blowout or a flat on any of them is stressful, and more so after dark. Whatever the time, phone us. We take calls 24 hours a day, every day, and send the nearest available fitter with a replacement tyre to fit where you are.

We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases, though distance and traffic make a difference. You'll get an honest idea of timing when you call.

Stopping safely around the city

  • M5, junctions 6 and 7: head for the hard shoulder or an emergency area and get as far left as you can. Hazards on, then out through the left-hand doors and behind the barrier, well away from the traffic. If you're in an emergency area or the car is stuck in a live lane, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you can't get out safely, stay belted in with the hazards on and dial 999.
  • The A4440 Southern Link: now dual carriageway from junction 7 of the M5 to the Powick roundabout, it carries fast traffic over the river. Don't stop on the bridge or in a running lane; continue slowly to the next roundabout and turn off there.
  • The A38, A44 and A449: pull into a lay-by, a side road or a garage forecourt, then wait away from the carriageway.

In the city centre, the river crossings back up quickly. If a tyre fails as you approach one, don't stop on the bridge itself. Cross slowly with the hazards on and pull in on the far side, where a stopped car won't hold up both directions and you can get out onto a pavement.

Our guide to a motorway flat tyre explains the motorway steps in more detail.

Holiday traffic on the M5

The M5 past Worcester is a main route to the South West, and on summer weekends it fills with cars loaded to the roof or towing caravans. Heavy loads, long distances and hot tarmac all push a tyre that was already marginal, and a slow leak that went unnoticed around town can suddenly fail at motorway speed. If a tyre feels wrong or the pressure light comes on with a full car, stop at the next safe place rather than pressing on to the services. Our page on the tyre pressure warning light explains what it's telling you.

Once the fitter reaches your car in Worcester

First they check the tyre properly. A puncture under 6 mm, in the central three-quarters of the tread, on a tyre that hasn't been run flat, can usually be repaired in line with British Standard guidance. If it can't, they fit a new tyre there and then from premium, mid-range or budget brands, all with the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and disposal of the old tyre are included at no charge.

If the car has stopped somewhere unsafe to work, such as an emergency area or a narrow stretch of the A44, our breakdown recovery moves it first.

Locking wheel nuts: on a loaded car, the key often ends up buried under luggage in the boot. Dig it out while you wait, because the wheel can't be removed without it.

Things to tell us when you ring

  1. Your location: a postcode or street, or the motorway junction and direction of travel.
  2. The tyre size from the sidewall, or your registration if you can't see it.
  3. Whether you're towing, and anything you know about the trailer or caravan tyres.
  4. What happened, and whether you're safely off the road.
