Puncture or blowout in Newcastle? Call us any time

The tyre might have given out on the Western Bypass during the evening crawl, on the Coast Road heading out towards Wallsend, or on a terraced street in Heaton where you'd parked for the night. Wherever and whenever it happens, ring us. There's someone on the phone through the night and at weekends, and we send a mobile fitter who brings the new tyre with them and fits it at the roadside or on your street.

We aim to get to you within 60 minutes in most cases, though that depends on where you are and what the traffic is doing. Match days at St James' Park and roadworks on the A1 make a difference, and we'll tell you honestly how long it's likely to take.

Keeping yourself safe on Tyneside's fast roads

A flat is a nuisance; standing in the wrong place beside a busy road is a real risk. How you handle it depends on where you've stopped:

  • On the A1 Western Bypass, the A19 or the A69: these dual carriageways carry heavy traffic at speed. If the car is still steering, slow down smoothly and head for the next slip road, lay-by or junction rather than stopping in a running lane. Once stopped, put the hazards on, get out on the side away from traffic and wait behind a barrier or well up the verge.
  • On a motorway: use the hard shoulder or an emergency area, switch on your hazard lights and leave through the left-hand doors, then wait behind the barrier. If you're in an emergency area or stranded in a live lane, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you're in danger. Don't try to change the wheel. Our motorway flat tyre guide explains why.
  • On the Coast Road and the city's radial routes: pull into a side street or car park where you won't block a bus stop, junction or driveway, and stay on the pavement side.

Fixing it where the car stands

In most situations the fitter swaps the damaged tyre for a new one on the spot. Where there's a small puncture in the main tread and the tyre hasn't been run flat, a repair following British Standard guidance may be possible. Anything worse, such as a cut sidewall or a tyre that has been shredded by driving on it, means a replacement. Choose from budget, mid-range or premium brands, all covered by the manufacturer's guarantee, with free balancing and free disposal of the old one.

If the car has ended up somewhere it can't safely be jacked up, for instance on a narrow verge or a busy junction, we can organise breakdown recovery to move it first.

One thing to check: locking wheel nuts need their own key. Look for it in the glovebox, the centre console or tucked beside the jack, and have it ready for the fitter.

Slow leaks that turn into flats overnight

On streets of terraced housing in places like Heaton, Fenham and Benwell, cars spend the night parked tight to the kerb, and a tyre that was a few psi down in the evening can be flat by morning. Cold weather off the North Sea makes pressures drop further. If a tyre keeps needing air or the warning light comes on, have a read of our page on slow puncture signs, and call us before it leaves you stuck on the morning commute.

Where in and around Newcastle we attend

We come out right across the city: Gosforth, Jesmond, Kenton and Fawdon in the north; Byker, Walker and Walkergate to the east; Elswick, Fenham, Denton, Westerhope and Newburn in the west. On the road network we cover the A1 Western Bypass, the A19 and the Tyne Tunnel approaches, the A69, the A167 and the A1058 Coast Road. Across the river and along the coast we also reach Gateshead, North Shields and Cramlington.

What we'll ask you on the phone

  1. Where you are: a street name, a road number and direction, a nearby junction, a postcode or what3words.
  2. What's happened to the tyre: flat, blown out, bulging, or a dashboard warning.
  3. The tyre size from the sidewall, such as 195/65 R15. If it's unreadable, your registration will do.
  4. Whether you're parked up safely and out of the traffic.
