Bradford tyre emergency? Help is a phone call away

A tyre that fails in Bradford usually does so on one of a few busy routes: the M606 running down to the M62 at Chain Bar, the A6177 ring road, the A650 heading out through the Aire Valley, or the A647 towards Leeds. Then there are the steep streets climbing out of the centre and the exposed roads up towards Queensbury. Wherever the car has stopped, and whatever the time, you can call us.

We run a 24-hour line, seven days a week, and send whichever fitter is nearest and free, with a replacement tyre and the gear to fit it where the car is. We aim to get to you within 60 minutes in most cases. Where you are, the traffic and the hour all make a difference, so we'll give you a straight answer on timing.

On the M606, the ring road or a hill: stopping safely

  • M606 and M62: pull onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area. Turn on the hazards, leave the car on the left side and wait behind the barrier, as far from the traffic as you can. In an emergency area, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you've stopped in a live lane and can't get out safely, stay put with your seatbelt on and hazards flashing, and dial 999.
  • A6177, A650 and A647: these move quickly at quieter times. Slow down smoothly and get into a side road, lay-by or car park rather than stopping on the main road.
  • Steep terraced streets: stop where you're not blocking traffic, apply the handbrake firmly and turn the wheels into the kerb. Don't stand downhill of the car.

Fixed on the spot, or moved if it has to be

Our fitter's first job is to look at the damage. A puncture under 6 mm in the central three-quarters of the tread, on a tyre that hasn't been driven flat, can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance. Anything outside that means a new tyre fitted there and then, in a premium, mid-range or budget brand with the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and disposal of your old tyre are included free.

If the slope is too steep to lift the car safely or the wheel is bent, we can arrange breakdown recovery to get the car somewhere suitable.

Locking wheel nuts: tell us when you ring if your car has them and whether the key is with you.

Cold mornings on the high ground

Parts of the district sit high up, and on a frosty morning tyre pressures drop as the air inside contracts. A tyre that was already a little soft can fall low enough to set off the warning light on the first cold day of autumn, or to flex and overheat on the climb back up from the city. Check pressures with the tyres cold, before you set off, and top them up to the figure in your handbook. If one tyre keeps losing air faster than the others, it probably has a slow puncture; our guide to slow puncture signs will help you tell. Getting it seen to early is far easier than dealing with it at the roadside on a dark winter evening.

  1. Your location: street, motorway and junction, or a what3words reference.

  3. The tyre size from the sidewall, or the car's registration.
