Trans-Pennine Tip: Tread Depth Matters in Spray
The M62 carries heavy lorry traffic across the Pennines, and in wet weather the spray from it can be thick enough to hide the car in front. Tyres need enough tread to clear water from under them; once the grooves get shallow, the car can start to aquaplane at motorway speed with very little warning.
The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, but grip in the wet drops off well before that. Most tyres have small wear bars moulded into the grooves: if the tread is level with them, it is time for new tyres. Checking takes a minute on the drive and is far easier than dealing with a slide on a wet slip road.
