Puncture or blowout in Stanmore?
Stanmore is where north-west London runs out into green belt, and its roads reflect that. There's the A410 crossing the town from Harrow Weald towards Canons Corner, Stanmore Hill climbing steeply to Bushey Heath, the A5 Brockley Hill heading north, and the A41 and junction 4 of the M1 only a few minutes away. A tyre can fail on any of them, or you might find one flat on the drive in Canons Park first thing. Call us at any hour, on any day. We send the nearest available fitter with a replacement tyre and everything needed to fit it where the car has stopped.
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases, depending on where you are and the traffic, and we'll give you an honest estimate on the phone.
Safe places to stop around Stanmore
- On Stanmore Hill: a flat on a steep gradient needs care. Pull in where the slope is gentlest and you aren't on a bend, set the handbrake firmly, leave the car in gear or park, and turn the front wheels into the kerb. Then get out on the pavement side.
- On the A41 Edgware Way or the A5: traffic is quicker here and some stretches are more open, with fewer places to pull off. Slow down smoothly, signal, and stop in a lay-by or side road. If you have to stop at the edge of the carriageway, use the hazards and stand well back from passing cars.
- On the M1: stop on the hard shoulder or in an emergency area, turn on the hazards, get out by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. If you're in an emergency area or can't get out of a live lane, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. Our motorway puncture guide explains why you shouldn't change the wheel yourself.
Swapping the tyre on the hill or the drive
Most often the fitter puts on a new tyre where you are. If there's a single small puncture in the central part of the tread and the tyre hasn't been driven on flat, a repair to British Standard guidance may be possible. Where it isn't safe to work on the car, for instance on a narrow bend on the hill or with a damaged wheel after a pothole, we can arrange breakdown recovery.
Choose from premium, mid-range and budget tyres, all carrying the manufacturer's guarantee, including larger rim sizes. Balancing and disposal of your old tyre are free, and prices are competitive with no hidden fees.
Locking nut adaptor: newer cars often have one locking nut per wheel. Find the adaptor before the fitter arrives; it's often in a tray under the boot floor.
The warning light on the way home from the M1
Many Stanmore drivers use the M1 and the A41 regularly, and a tyre pressure warning at motorway speed is easy to dismiss as a sensor fault. It shouldn't be. A tyre that is losing air can overheat and fail, especially on a long run. If the light comes on, reduce your speed, leave at the next junction and check the tyres once you've stopped safely. Our article on the tyre pressure warning light explains what it can mean. If one tyre is clearly low, call us from wherever you've stopped.
