School-Run Slow Punctures: Spot Them Early
A slow puncture rarely announces itself. On a car that mostly does short trips to school, the shops and back, you might only notice that the steering feels a bit heavy, or that the pressure warning light has come on and gone off again. Meanwhile the tyre is running soft, which wears the edges, heats the structure and can damage it beyond repair.
A simple habit helps. Every couple of weeks, walk round the car before the morning drop-off and look at each tyre: one that sits lower than the others needs checking. Run your hand over the tread (carefully) for screws or nails. If you have to top one tyre up more often than the rest, assume it has a puncture. Caught early, a slow puncture in the main tread is usually repairable. Left for weeks, it often means a new tyre.
