Help with a flat anywhere in Watford, at any hour

Watford is boxed in by motorway. The M1 runs up its eastern side with junctions 5 and 6, the M25 curves round the north with junctions 19 to 21a, and the two meet in the tangle of slip roads at junction 6a. A tyre can just as easily give out on one of those as on the ring road at closing time or outside your house in Meriden before the school run. Whenever it happens, phone us. We answer every hour of the day and night, all week, and the nearest free fitter drives out to you with a new tyre and the equipment to put it on.

Our aim is to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases, though the motorways and the town centre traffic can change that. We'll give you a realistic time on the phone.

Before anything else: get out of harm's way

  • M1 or M25: steer onto the hard shoulder, or into an emergency area where there's no hard shoulder, and switch the hazard warning lights on. Get everyone out on the left, away from the lanes, and wait behind the safety barrier. Leave the wheel alone; changing it beside motorway traffic is how people get hurt. If you've stopped in an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 as well as us. Our motorway flat tyre advice goes into more detail.
  • A41 North Western Avenue or the A405: both are dual carriageways with traffic moving quickly. Slow down steadily, hazards on, and get to a lay-by, a slip road or a side turning instead of stopping in lane one.
  • The ring road and town centre: it's one-way and busy, so move off it into a side street or car park if the car will roll there slowly, then call.

What the fitter can sort out on the spot

A nail or screw in the middle of the tread, under 6 mm and on a tyre that hasn't been run flat, can often be fixed following British Standard guidance. Anything else, such as a split sidewall, a blowout, a puncture close to the shoulder or a tyre that's been driven on flat, means fitting a new one there and then. We carry budget, mid-range and premium options, every new tyre has the manufacturer's guarantee, and balancing and taking the old tyre away cost nothing extra.

If the car can't be worked on where it is, for example on a motorway or with a damaged wheel, our breakdown recovery service moves it somewhere safe first.

Locking wheel nut key: the wheel can't come off without it. While you wait, check the glovebox, the centre console and the spare wheel well so it's ready when the fitter arrives.

A warning light on the way home

Plenty of Watford emergencies start with an amber light on the dashboard rather than a bang. The car feels fine, so it's tempting to press on up the A41 or onto the M25 and deal with it tomorrow. A tyre that's losing air heats up quickly at motorway speed, and that's when a slow leak becomes a blowout. If the light comes on, pull in somewhere safe and look at all four tyres. Our page on the tyre pressure warning light explains what it's telling you. If one tyre is visibly low, don't drive on it; call us out to where you are.

Watford areas and routes we attend

We cover the whole town, including the centre, Holywell, Meriden, Callowland, Woodside, Carpenders Park and South Oxhey, plus the business parks and the routes in between. On the main roads we come out to the M1 at junctions 5, 6 and 6a, the M25 between junctions 19 and 21a, the A41, the A405, the A412 and the A4008 Stephenson Way. Neighbouring towns include Kings Langley, St Albans and Harrow.

When you ring us, tell us

  1. Exactly where the car is: motorway and nearest junction, marker post number, road name or postcode.
  2. The tyre size from its sidewall, for example 215/55 R17, or the registration if you can't read it.
  3. What's wrong: a bang and a shredded tyre, a slow loss of pressure, or a nail you can see.
  4. Whether anyone in the car needs to get somewhere urgently.
