Emergency tyre help across Oxford
In Oxford, tyre trouble tends to strike on the ring road or just off it. A blowout on the A34 near Botley, a puncture noticed in a park and ride car park after a long day, or a soft tyre on a permit-parking street in Cowley when you need to leave at five in the morning: these are the calls we take. We answer around the clock, seven days a week, and dispatch the nearest free fitter with a replacement tyre to wherever the car is.
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Ring road traffic and the time of day both play a part, and we'll give you a straight estimate on the phone.
Keeping safe on the A34, the bypasses and city streets
Oxford's fast roads leave little room to stop, so think about where you are before anything else:
- A34 and the northern and eastern bypasses: these are fast dual carriageways with interchanges at Hinksey Hill, Botley and Peartree. If the car will still roll slowly, leave at the next slip road or pull into a lay-by. If you have to stop on the verge, put the hazards on, get out on the side away from traffic and stand well back behind any barrier.
- On the M40 towards junctions 8 and 9: use the hard shoulder or an emergency area, switch on hazard lights, leave by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. From an emergency area or a live lane, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000 too.
- Terraced streets and car parks: stay with the car only if it's safe. Leave space for buses and cyclists, and let us know if you're in a residents' bay or a multi-storey so the fitter can plan access.
Fitted, repaired or recovered
The usual outcome is a new tyre fitted where the car stands. When the damage is a small hole in the middle of the tread and the tyre hasn't been run flat, the fitter can repair it in line with British Standard guidance; our article on tyres with a nail or screw in them explains when that applies. If the car is on a stretch of road where nobody can work safely, we'll arrange breakdown recovery instead.
Tyres come in budget, mid-range and premium ranges, all with the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing the wheel and taking the old tyre away are free.
Potholes, kerbs and the drive home
Many emergency calls in the city start with a sharp hit: a pothole on a side road, or a kerb clipped while squeezing past a parked van in Jericho or Headington. The tyre may hold for a while and then bulge or deflate later, often on the bypass on the way home. If you felt a hard knock and the steering now pulls or a warning light comes on, stop somewhere safe and call rather than pressing on to the A34.
Students and visitors parking for a few days sometimes come back to a car sitting low on one corner. Don't pump it up and head straight onto the ring road. A tyre that has been sitting flat may have damage inside the sidewall that you can't see, so let the fitter have a look first.
Locking nut key: many cars have one locking nut per wheel. Find the key while you wait, usually in the glovebox or under the boot floor, as the fitter needs it to remove the wheel.
Where in and around the city we attend
Every part of Oxford, from Summertown, Marston and Headington to Cowley, Blackbird Leys, Littlemore and Botley, plus the park and ride sites and the ring road. Beyond the city we cover the A34, the A40, the A44 and the A420, and towns such as Kidlington, Abingdon and Witney.
When you call, please tell us:
- Your location: the street, the park and ride site, or the nearest ring road roundabout or interchange.
- What happened, for example a bang, a slow loss of air, sidewall damage or a warning light.
- The size from the tyre wall, such as 215/60 R16, or the registration if you can't read it.
- Whether you're in a safe spot.
