Help with a burst or flat tyre in Abingdon

For most Abingdon drivers the A34 is part of everyday life. It runs along the west of the town, with the Lodge Hill junction on the A4183 Oxford Road to the north and the Marcham interchange on the A415 to the west, and it carries a heavy mix of cars and lorries between Oxford, Didcot and the M4. A tyre that fails on it, or on the A415 out towards Culham, or simply goes flat outside a house in Caldecott overnight, is exactly what our emergency service is for. Ring us at any time. We answer 24/7 and send the nearest available fitter to replace the tyre where the car is.

We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. The A34 can be slow at peak times, so we'll give you an honest idea of timing when you call.

Getting off the A34 safely

The A34 is a fast dual carriageway with a lot of heavy goods traffic, and lay-bys and slip roads are usually your best places to stop. If a tyre goes:

  • Stay calm and steer straight. Ease your foot off the accelerator and let the car slow before braking gently.
  • Make for the next lay-by or exit, at low speed with hazards on if needed. A short distance on a flat is better than stopping in a running lane with lorries behind you.
  • Once stopped, get everyone out on the side away from the traffic and stand behind the barrier or well back on the verge.
  • If the car stops in a lane and it isn't safe to get out, keep your seat belts on, leave the hazards flashing and call 999.

Don't try to change the wheel next to fast traffic. Much of our advice for a flat on the motorway applies to the A34 as well.

Lodge Hill works, the A415 and town roads

Work to add south-facing slip roads at the Lodge Hill junction has changed the layout there, so the lanes may not be where you remember them. If a tyre goes near any roadworks, follow the temporary signs, keep your speed down and stop only where there is space clear of the cones and the workforce. If you're unsure, carry on slowly to the next proper exit. On the A415 and A4183, which are single carriageways, pull into a lay-by, a side road or a wide entrance. In town, around the centre and the bridge, choose a spot where you aren't blocking a junction or bus stop and the fitter has room on the wheel side.

Repair or replacement, done on site

The fitter checks the tyre before recommending anything. A nail or screw in the central ¾ of the tread, with a hole under 6 mm, can often be repaired to British Standard guidance if the tyre hasn't been driven flat; our guide on nail and screw punctures explains the rules. If not, a new tyre is fitted at the roadside, with premium, mid-range and budget choices all carrying the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and old-tyre disposal are free. Where the car can't be worked on safely, we can arrange breakdown recovery.

Locking wheel nut key: look for it in the glovebox, the boot or with the tool kit while you're waiting. If it's missing, tell us when you call.

When you phone, tell us

  1. Where the car is: the road, which direction you were heading, and the last junction or lay-by you passed.
  2. The tyre size from the sidewall, for example 215/60 R16, or your registration.
  3. What happened: a blowout, a slow leak or a pressure warning.
  4. Whether you've managed to get off the carriageway.
