Huddersfield flat tyre help around the clock

Huddersfield sits in a bowl of hills with the M62 running along its northern edge. Junction 24 at Ainley Top feeds the A629 and A643 down into town, junctions 23 and 25 sit either side, and the stretch between them is one of the busiest on the trans-Pennine route. From the ring road, the A62 heads west through the Colne Valley towards Marsden, the A629 runs north to Halifax and south towards Penistone, and the A616 winds down to Holmfirth. A tyre can fail anywhere on that lot, often on a climb, a bend or after dark.

When it does, call us. We pick up 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and send the nearest available fitter with a replacement tyre and the kit to fit it where you've stopped. We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Hills, traffic and the hour can affect that, and we'll tell you honestly what to expect.

Safe places to stop, from the M62 to the valleys

  • M62: get onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area, hazard lights on. Climb out on the passenger side and wait behind the barrier, well away from the lanes. If you're in an emergency area, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If the car is stuck in a live lane and getting out isn't safe, keep your belt fastened, hazards on, and call 999.
  • Ainley Top and the ring road: busy junctions with traffic coming from every side. Clear the roundabout and turn into the next side street or car park before stopping.
  • Valley roads to Marsden, Holmfirth and Meltham: narrow in places, twisting and often unlit. Look for a lay-by, a gateway or a straight stretch where approaching drivers will see you, and wait away from the car.

Our article on dealing with a flat on the motorway has more detail.

Back on the road, or recovered safely

Once the fitter has inspected the tyre, they'll explain the options. A puncture under 6 mm in the central three-quarters of the tread can usually be repaired to British Standard guidance, provided the tyre hasn't been driven on flat. If it can't be repaired, a new tyre goes on there and then, in a premium, mid-range or budget brand with the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and removing your old tyre are free.

On a steep or narrow road where jacking the car isn't safe, we can arrange breakdown recovery instead.

Locking nut key: have a look in the glovebox and under the boot floor while you wait. If your wheels have locking nuts, the fitter will need it.

Run-flats and space-savers on Pennine hills

Plenty of newer cars come with run-flat tyres or a space-saver spare instead of a full-size wheel. Both are meant to get you a limited distance at reduced speed, not to carry you over the hills home. A run-flat that has lost its air is working hard on every climb out of the valley, and driving it beyond the handbook limits can leave it beyond repair. A space-saver usually has a lower speed limit printed on it, which is easy to forget on the M62. If your car's warning light comes on, slow down and call us rather than pressing on. Our article on whether run-flat tyres can be repaired explains what the fitter will check.
