Warrington tyre emergencies, day or night
Three motorways meet around Warrington: the M6 runs down its eastern side, the M62 crosses the north and the M56 the south. Add the A49, the A57 and the A50, and it's a place where long-distance drivers and local commuters share the same roads, and where a tyre failure can strand you far from home. Whatever the time, ring us. We take calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and send the nearest available fitter with a tyre to fit wherever you've stopped, whether that's a hard shoulder, a business park in Birchwood or your drive in Great Sankey.
In most cases we aim to get to you within 60 minutes, depending on your location, the hour and the traffic. When you call we'll give you a realistic estimate.
Which motorway, which junction?
With so many interchanges close together, it's easy to lose track of exactly where you are, and that slows everyone down. Look for the small blue driver location signs at the roadside: they show the motorway, the direction and a distance figure that pinpoints your position. Otherwise, the last junction you passed helps. On the M6, junction 20 serves Lymm and the M56, junction 21 is the A57, and junction 21A is the M62 interchange. The Thelwall Viaduct carries the M6 over the Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal between junctions 20 and 21.
Plenty of the drivers on these motorways aren't local at all. They may have driven a long way from the Midlands, Scotland or Wales, and a tyre that was losing air slowly at the start of the trip finally gives up after hours at speed. If you've noticed the car pulling to one side or a pressure warning coming and going, our article on slow puncture signs is worth a read, and it's better to stop at the next services and call us than to push on.
Waiting safely for the fitter
- Motorway: get onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area, put the hazards on and leave by the left-hand doors. Stand behind the barrier, well back from the traffic, and don't try to fit the spare. If you've stopped in an emergency area or ended up in a live lane, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you're at risk. The steps are set out in our motorway flat tyre guide.
- A49, A57 and A50: these carry fast, heavy traffic, including lorries heading for the distribution parks. If you can still steer, slow down smoothly and turn into a side road, lay-by or forecourt rather than stopping on the carriageway.
- Lanes around Lymm and Culcheth: many are unlit. Stop on a straight stretch, switch on the hazards, and wait off the road if there's a safe verge.
What happens at the roadside
Our fitter inspects the damage and does whichever job is safe. A small puncture in the middle of the tread, not run flat, can often be repaired under British Standard guidance. A sidewall cut, a bulge or a tyre that's come apart needs replacing, and we fit the new one where the vehicle is: premium, mid-range or budget, cars, vans and light commercials, all with the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and disposal of the old tyre are free. If the car is somewhere unsafe to work, we can arrange breakdown recovery.
One thing to find first: the locking wheel nut key. Check the glovebox and around the jack, because without it the wheel won't come off.
