Puncture or blowout in Stockport?
You might be on the hard shoulder of the M60 near Portwood, stuck on the A6 through Hazel Grove with a tyre flapping, or looking at a flat on the drive in Bramhall at six in the morning. Whenever it is, give us a ring. We answer 24 hours a day, every day, and dispatch a mobile fitter with a replacement tyre to wherever the car has come to rest.
We aim to be there within 60 minutes in most cases, depending on your exact location, the time of day and the traffic. We'll give you an honest idea of timing when you call. Late evenings, Sundays and bank holidays are no different for us: the line is staffed and fitters are out, which matters once the garages and tyre centres have shut for the night and there's nobody else to ring.
Keeping out of harm's way while you wait
Stockport mixes a motorway, busy trunk roads and hilly residential streets, so the right move depends on where the tyre let go.
- On the M60 (junctions 1, 2, 25 and 27 serve the borough) or the M56: steer onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area, turn on the hazard lights and leave the car by the left-hand doors. Get behind the barrier and stay there. In an emergency area, or if you've been forced to stop in a live lane, ring National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you feel in danger. Never try to swap the wheel next to motorway traffic.
- On the A555 airport relief road, the A34 or the A6: traffic here moves quickly and verges are limited. If the car is still under control, slow gently and leave at the next junction or pull into a lay-by or side road.
- On the hills around the town centre and Edgeley: stop where you aren't on a bend, set the handbrake hard and turn the front wheels towards the kerb.
- Towards Marple and Mellor: lanes on the eastern edge get dark and narrow. Pick a straight stretch or a gateway so oncoming drivers can see you, and keep the hazards on.
At the roadside: what we can sort
Replacing the tyre where the car stands is the usual outcome. If there's a single small puncture in the centre of the tread and you haven't driven on it flat, the fitter may repair it, sticking to British Standard limits. If the spot isn't safe to work in, our breakdown recovery service can shift the car somewhere that is.
Tyres come in premium, mid-range and budget choices, all with the manufacturer's guarantee, and wheel balancing and disposal of the old one are included free.
Warning lights and the slow drift to flat
Not every emergency starts with a bang. A tyre pressure warning on the dash during the commute along the A6 or the M60 can mean a nail working its way in, and the tyre may still be drivable for a short distance at low speed. If it is going down quickly, though, stop. A tyre run flat for even a mile often can't be saved. Our article on the tyre pressure warning light explains what the symbol means and when to pull over straight away.
Before the fitter arrives: look for the locking wheel nut key in the glovebox or under the boot floor. The wheel can't be removed without it.
Stockport districts and nearby towns
We come out to the town centre, Edgeley, Heaton Chapel, Heaton Moor, Reddish, Portwood, Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, Bramhall, Hazel Grove and Marple. On the road network we cover the stretch of the M60 that crosses the north of the borough, the A6, the A34, the A555 and the M56 corridor towards the airport. Further afield, fitters also reach Manchester, Wilmslow and Macclesfield.
