A flat tyre in Manchester, any hour

A tyre that goes on the M60 at rush hour, a puncture discovered in an Ancoats apartment car park at midnight, a sidewall split on a kerb in Chorlton after a Saturday night out: emergencies in this city come in every shape. Ring us whenever it happens. The phone is answered round the clock, seven days a week, and we send a fitter who carries tyres and equipment and does the job where your car has stopped.

Our aim is to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases. Traffic on the ring road, match days and roadworks can stretch that, so we tell you a realistic time on the phone rather than a hopeful one.

Staying safe on the ring road and the radial routes

Before thinking about the tyre, think about where you are standing. Manchester has three very different kinds of road where cars get stuck:

  • The M60, M56, M62 or M602: get onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area, put the hazard warning lights on and climb out through the left-hand doors. Stand behind the barrier, away from the traffic, and leave the wheel alone. If you've stopped in an emergency area or had to stop in a live lane, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 (or 999 if you're in danger) before calling us. Read our guide to a flat tyre on the motorway if you want the detail.
  • The Mancunian Way and the big dual carriageways like Princess Parkway or the A6 through Longsight and Levenshulme: there is often little room to stop. Ease off and coast to the next slip road, side street or petrol forecourt if the car is still controllable, rather than halting in a running lane.
  • Terraced side streets and car parks: stop where you won't block a bus lane, a tram crossing or someone's drive, and keep the handbrake on.

How the fitter deals with it when they arrive

Usually the fix is a new tyre put on at the kerb. If the damage is a nail or screw in the middle of the tread, the hole is small and the tyre hasn't been run flat, a repair to British Standard guidance may be possible instead; our article on whether a tyre with a nail or screw can be repaired explains the limits. Where the car is in a spot that can't be worked on, such as a narrow hard shoulder or the middle of a junction, we can arrange breakdown recovery to move it first.

Replacement tyres are available in budget, mid-range and premium ranges with the maker's guarantee, and balancing plus disposal of the damaged tyre cost nothing extra.

Find the wheel nut key now: many cars have one locking nut per wheel. Look in the glovebox, the boot floor or the spare wheel well while you wait, so the fitter isn't held up.

Why city tyres fail at awkward moments

Manchester's roads take a lot of punishment from buses, construction traffic and the tram network, and debris from building sites in the centre ends up in the gutters. A screw picked up on a morning commute can let the air out over the day until the car is undriveable by evening. Late shifts at the hospitals and the airport mean plenty of people are heading home in the small hours, long after tyre centres have locked up, and that is when a call to us makes the most sense.

Districts and roads we reach

We attend the city centre, the Northern Quarter, Ancoats, Hulme and Moss Side, and the southern suburbs out through Fallowfield, Withington, Didsbury and Wythenshawe. North and east, we cover the areas around the ring road towards the M62 and the M67. Motorway call-outs include the M60 around the M56 junction at J4, the M62 and M602 interchange at J12, and the M61 junction at J15. Neighbouring areas include Salford, Stockport and Stretford.

Details that help us find you

  1. Your location: the road, nearest junction number, car park name, postcode or what3words.
  2. The problem: flat, blowout, visible damage, or a warning light on the dash.
  3. The tyre size printed on the sidewall (for example 205/55 R16), or the registration if you can't see it.
  4. Whether you're out of the traffic and safe.
