Tyre gone on a Peterborough parkway?

A blowout doesn't wait for a convenient moment. It might be a rear tyre going soft on Soke Parkway in the evening rush, a front tyre tearing on the A1(M) near the Fletton Parkway interchange, or a car found sitting on its rim outside a house in Paston before a night shift. Call us at any hour, any day of the week, and we'll send the nearest free fitter with a replacement tyre and everything needed to fit it where the car is.

We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Distance, time of day and traffic all play a part, and we'll give you a straight answer on timing when you ring.

Keeping yourself safe until help arrives

Your first job is getting out of harm's way, not looking at the tyre. The right move depends on the road:

  • The A1(M) south of the city: steer onto the hard shoulder, or into an emergency area if that's what is nearest, and turn the hazard lights on. Everyone should get out by the left-hand doors and stand behind the barrier. In an emergency area, or if you're stuck in a live lane, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000; if you can't get out of the car safely, stay belted in and call 999. Leave the wheel alone. There's more in our guide to a motorway flat.
  • The parkways: Fletton, Frank Perkins, Nene and Soke Parkway are fast dual carriageways. Slow down steadily and leave at the next numbered junction, then stop in a side road or car park rather than on the slip road.
  • Fen droves and village lanes: many are unlit and have deep ditches beside them. Stop on firm ground with all four wheels on the tarmac if you can, hazards on, and wait away from the road edge.

New tyre, repair or a lift elsewhere

Replacing the tyre on the spot is the usual outcome. If the problem is a nail or screw in the central part of the tread and the tyre hasn't been run flat, our fitter may be able to repair it to British Standard guidance; our article on nails and screws in tyres explains the limits. When the car has stopped somewhere a fitter can't safely kneel beside it, or the rim is damaged, breakdown recovery can take it somewhere better first.

Tyres come in premium, mid-range and budget brands with the manufacturer's guarantee, and wheel balancing and disposal of the old tyre are free.

Using the junction numbers helps. Peterborough numbers the roundabouts and interchanges on its parkways. If you can see a junction sign, tell us the number and which way you were heading, and the fitter will find you much faster.

Night shifts, warehouses and long drives home

A lot of people in and around the city work shifts at the distribution sites and business parks, which means plenty of driving at hours when tyre centres are shut. A slow puncture picked up on the way in can finish the job in the staff car park by the time you clock off, or on the A47 heading back out towards Thorney. If that happens, don't try to limp to a garage the next morning. Driving on a very low tyre can damage the sidewall beyond repair. Leave the car where it is and call us.

The same goes for anyone coming down the A1 late at night. If the tyre warning light comes on, come off at the next junction and check it rather than pressing on to home.

Districts, villages and roads we reach

We come out to the city centre and all the townships, including Paston, Gunthorpe, Parnwell, Millfield, Netherton, Longthorpe, Hampton and the Ortons, as well as Yaxley, Eye, Glinton and Whittlesey. Roads include the A1(M) and A1, the A47, the A15, the A605 and the parkway network. For booked tyre work, see mobile tyre fitting in Peterborough.

Heading south, our fitters also cover Cambridge, and to the west Northampton.

Details to give us when you ring

  • Your location: road, parkway junction number, postcode or a what3words reference.
  • What went wrong: a blowout, a slow leak, a split sidewall or a dashboard warning.
  • The tyre size off the sidewall, for example 215/60 R16, or your registration.
  • Whether the car has a locking wheel nut, and whether you have the key to hand.
