Getting Around Cambridge on Four Wheels
Cambridge is a city that makes life awkward for cars. The centre is built for bikes and buses, parking is tight, and many people who drive in leave the car at a park and ride on the edge of town. Meanwhile the big roads stay busy all day: the A14 across the north, the M11 coming up from London to meet it near Girton, and the A10, A11 and A1307 feeding in from the surrounding villages.
So when a tyre goes, the car is often somewhere a garage visit is a nuisance: on a residents' street in Romsey, at a science park, or on the hard shoulder of the A14. We bring the fix to you instead. A mobile fitter arrives with the right tyre and the equipment, at any hour, and in most cases we aim to be there within 60 minutes, depending on where you are and how the traffic is moving.
Why a Mobile Fitter Suits Cambridge
Trying to reach a tyre centre on a flat, then wait while it's done, can eat half a day in this city. A fitter who comes to the car takes that problem away. A typical call-out looks like this:
- You tell us where the car is and, if you can, the size printed on the tyre.
- We pass the job to the nearest free fitter from our network of more than 100 across England and Wales.
- The fitter repairs the puncture or fits a new tyre, balances the wheel free and takes the old tyre away free.
- You pay by card, cash or bank transfer, with no hidden fees, and new tyres come with the manufacturer's guarantee.
Our Cambridge Tyre Services
- Mobile tyre fitting: a new tyre, or a full set, fitted at home, at your office or college car park, or in a park and ride bay before you head back out of the city.
- Puncture repair: a small hole in the middle of the tread can be repaired safely, so a stray screw doesn't automatically cost you a new tyre.
- Van tyres: for delivery drivers, builders and couriers keeping the city's businesses supplied, with light commercial tyres fitted on site.
- Breakdown recovery: for cars with wheel damage or ones stuck in a dangerous spot on a fast road, where fitting at the roadside isn't the right call.
City Districts, Villages and Main Routes
Inside the city we cover Chesterton, Arbury, King's Hedges, Cherry Hinton, Trumpington, Romsey and Newnham. Beyond the edges, our fitters reach villages such as Girton, Histon, Impington, Milton, Fulbourn and Great Shelford. Roads we often attend include the A14, the M11, the A10 and the A1134 ring road.
Further afield, we also have pages for Peterborough to the north-west and Baldock to the south-west, reached from Cambridge via the A14 and A1, and the A10 and A505, respectively.
Road Debris on the A14 and How to Spot the Damage
The A14 is one of the country's main freight routes, linking the port of Felixstowe with the Midlands, so it carries a lot of lorries. Where there are lorries, there's debris: bits of metal, broken straps and shards from shredded truck tyres. Run over something sharp at 70mph and the tyre may not go down straight away. Often the object lodges in the tread and lets air out slowly over the following days.
If you've driven over something on a dual carriageway, check the tyres when you next stop. Look for anything embedded in the tread and for a tyre that looks lower than the others. Don't pull the object out; it may be plugging the hole. Keep your speed down and call us, and if it's within the repairable zone we can often fix it rather than replace it.
