Kettering flat tyre? Call us any time
The A14 runs right along the southern edge of Kettering, carrying lorries between the M1 and the east coast ports, with the A43 and the A509 joining it near town. Add the A6 north towards Rothwell and Desborough and a lot of fast rural roads, and there are plenty of places for a tyre to fail with nowhere obvious to go. When yours does, phone us. We answer around the clock, every day of the year, and the nearest free fitter comes out with a tyre to fit on the spot.
In most cases we aim to arrive within 60 minutes. Traffic and how far out you are both make a difference, and we'll give you an honest estimate before we set off.
The A14: a dual carriageway full of lorries
Where you stop matters more than anything else on a road this busy.
- On the A14 near junctions 7 to 9: heavy goods traffic moves at speed. If the car is still driveable at a crawl, get to the next exit or lay-by. If you have to stop on the verge, pull well over, put the hazards on, get out on the side away from the traffic and stand behind the barrier or well up the bank.
- On the A43 or A6: look for a lay-by, a side road or a field entrance where you're clear of the carriageway and visible from a distance.
- If you're heading onto the M1: use the hard shoulder or an emergency area, leave by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. In an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you're stuck in a live lane, stay belted in with the hazards on and call 999.
How the fitter deals with the tyre
The fitter checks the damage first. A puncture of less than 6 mm within the central three-quarters of the tread, on a tyre that hasn't been driven flat, can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance. If the damage is to the sidewall, there's a bulge, or the tyre has been destroyed by running on the rim, a new tyre goes on straight away. We carry premium, mid-range and budget options with the manufacturer's guarantee, and balancing and disposal of the old tyre cost nothing extra.
If the car has stopped somewhere too dangerous to work on, such as a narrow verge on the A14, we can arrange breakdown recovery to move it to safety.
While you're waiting: find the locking wheel nut key if your car uses one. Without it, the wheel stays on. Glovebox, boot well and door pockets are the usual places.
Blowouts at dual carriageway speeds
Long runs on a dual carriageway build up heat in the tyres, and a tyre that's underinflated or already damaged is far more likely to fail at speed. If you feel a sudden vibration or hear a bang, grip the wheel firmly, don't brake hard, and let the car slow down in a straight line before steering gently to a safe place. Before a long A14 trip, check pressures with the tyres cold and look for cuts or bulges. Our guide to the tyre pressure warning light explains what it's telling you and how urgently to act.
Kettering and the villages around it
We cover the whole town, including Barton Seagrave, Ise Lodge, Grange, Headlands and the town centre, along with Burton Latimer, Rothwell, Desborough, Broughton and Geddington. Our fitters work along the A14, the A43, the A509, the A6 and the smaller roads between the villages. Nearby towns with their own pages include Corby, Wellingborough and Market Harborough.
What to say when you call
- Where you've stopped: the road, the direction you were heading, and the nearest junction or village.
- What happened: a puncture, a blowout or a warning light.
- The tyre size from the sidewall, or the registration if it's easier.
- Whether you're safely away from passing traffic.
