Emergency tyre help across Northampton, at any hour

Northampton has three M1 junctions on its doorstep, a ring of dual carriageways and a great many vans working out of the business parks. That mix means tyre trouble is not confined to office hours. A blowout can happen on the A45 Nene Valley Way during the late commute, on the A43 heading out towards Moulton, or on a quiet estate road in West Hunsbury long after dark. Whatever the time, pick up the phone. We answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and dispatch the nearest free fitter with a new tyre and the equipment to fit it where you are.

In most cases we aim to arrive within 60 minutes. Traffic on the A45 and the time of night both play a part, so we'll give you a realistic estimate rather than a promise.

Junctions 15, 15A and 16: keeping safe by the motorway

  • On the M1: pull over onto the hard shoulder, or into an emergency area where there's no hard shoulder. Switch the hazard lights on, climb out on the passenger side and wait up the bank behind the barrier. If you've stopped in an emergency area, ring National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If the car comes to a halt in a running lane and getting out isn't safe, keep your seatbelt on, leave the hazards flashing and call 999.
  • At Northampton services by junction 15A: if you can reach the services slowly without driving far on a shredded tyre, it's a far better place to wait than the hard shoulder.
  • On the A45 or the A43: traffic on these dual carriageways moves fast. Signal early, slow down gradually and get off at the next interchange or into a lay-by. Never try to swap the wheel with lorries passing a few feet away.

What the fitter does when they reach you

The fitter inspects the tyre before anything else. If the hole is under 6 mm, sits in the central three-quarters of the tread and the tyre hasn't been driven on while flat, a repair to British Standard guidance may be possible. Damage outside those limits means a new tyre, fitted at the roadside or on your drive, in a premium, mid-range or budget brand with the manufacturer's guarantee. We balance the wheel and take the old tyre away at no extra charge.

If the car is somewhere it can't safely be worked on, or the wheel itself is damaged, we can arrange breakdown recovery to move it first.

Vans and locking nuts: fleet vans are often handed between drivers and the locking wheel nut key goes missing. Check the cab, the glovebox and under the seats before the fitter arrives, as the wheel can't come off without it.

Nails, screws and the warehouse estates

Much of the tyre damage around Northampton comes from debris rather than wear. Loose screws and offcuts collect in the yards and approach roads around Brackmills, Moulton Park and the other distribution sites, and a tyre that collects one may not go flat until hours later on the motorway. If you spot something embedded in the tread, don't pull it out. Our article on whether a tyre with a nail or screw can be repaired explains why, and what decides between a repair and a replacement.

Northampton districts and roads we come out to

We cover every part of town, including Kingsthorpe along the A508 Harborough Road, Duston, Upton, St James, Weston Favell, Wootton, Hardingstone and both Hunsburys, along with Moulton Park off the A5076. On the roads, that means the M1 from junction 15 to 16, the A45 between the Queen Eleanor and Brackmills interchanges and beyond, and the A43. Nearby towns with their own pages include Wellingborough, Daventry and Towcester.

Details to have ready when you ring

  1. Exactly where you are, including the direction of travel if you're on the M1, A45 or A43.
  2. The type of problem: puncture, blowout, a visible bulge or a warning light on the dash.
  3. The tyre size from the sidewall, such as 205/55 R16, and the load index for a van, or just your registration.
  4. Whether you're parked somewhere out of the way of traffic.
