A sudden tyre failure at speed feels alarming, but the right reaction is a calm one. Grip the wheel firmly, don't brake hard, and let the car slow down gradually while you steer straight. Once you're under control, signal and move to the left, onto the hard shoulder or an emergency area if there is one, or the first safe place to stop.
Put your hazard lights on, get everyone out through the doors on the verge side, and wait behind the barrier if it's safe to do so. Don't try to change a wheel next to live traffic. If you can't get off the carriageway at all, call 999. Otherwise, ring us once you're safe and tell us which direction you were heading and the last junction you passed.
