Tyre trouble in Maidenhead, day or night

Maidenhead drivers spend a lot of time on fast roads. The M4 runs past the south of the town with junction 8/9 at Holyport, the A404(M) heads north from there to the Thicket roundabout, and the A404 dual carriageway carries on past Bisham to the M40. A tyre that blows on any of those, or goes flat on the drive in Woodlands Park late on a Sunday, needs help where it is. Call us whenever it happens. We take calls 24 hours a day, every day, and send the nearest available fitter out with a replacement tyre.

We aim to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases. That depends on where the car is and how the traffic is moving, and we'll be straight with you about timing on the phone.

Staying safe on the M4 and the A404

Between junctions 3 and 12 the M4 is a smart motorway with all lanes running, so there is no hard shoulder near Maidenhead. Here's what to do:

  • Get off if you can: leave at junction 8/9 or the next exit if the car will make it at low speed.
  • Otherwise use an emergency area: pull in, switch the hazard lights on, get out by the left-hand doors and stand behind the barrier. Phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000 or use the SOS phone there.
  • Stuck in a live lane: if getting out isn't safe, keep your seat belt on, leave the hazards flashing and call 999.
  • On the A404(M) or A404: slow down steadily and aim for the next slip road. If you have to stop at the side, get everyone out on the verge side and wait well back from the traffic.

For the full picture, read our guide on what to do with a flat on the motorway. And in all cases, resist the urge to drive on: a flat tyre is wrecked very quickly, and the wheel can be damaged too.

Our fitter's options at the roadside

We look at the tyre before recommending anything. A puncture within the central three-quarters of the tread, no wider than 6 mm, can usually be repaired to British Standard guidance if the tyre hasn't been driven on flat. Damage outside that area, a blowout or a bulge means a new tyre, which we fit on the spot from budget, mid-range or premium brands with the manufacturer's guarantee. There's no charge for balancing or for taking away the old tyre. If the car can't be worked on where it is, our breakdown recovery can move it first.

Locking wheel nuts: track down the key now. It tends to live in the glovebox, the centre armrest or with the jack under the boot floor.

Damage you don't see in the dark

At night, a piece of debris on a fast road like the A404 is hard to pick out in your headlights until you're on top of it. Hit something and the tyre may seem fine at first, then the pressure warning light comes on a few miles later. Don't ignore it. Pull off at the next safe place and look at each tyre, and check our explanation of the tyre pressure warning light if you aren't sure what it means. If a tyre is low or damaged, stay put and call us rather than heading back onto a fast road.

Maidenhead areas and roads we cover

We come out to all of Maidenhead, including Woodlands Park, Altwood, the town centre and Holyport, and to villages such as Burchetts Green, Littlewick Green, Bray and Taplow. On the main roads, we attend the M4 around junction 8/9, the A404(M), the A404 towards Marlow, the A4 and the A308. We also cover neighbouring Marlow, Windsor and Bourne End.

What we'll ask you

  1. Your location: road and direction, nearest junction, or a what3words reference.
  2. The tyre size from the sidewall, such as 235/45 R18, or your registration.
  3. What happened and whether you can see the cause.
  4. Whether you and your passengers are safely away from the traffic.
