Beaconsfield roadside tyre help, around the clock

Beaconsfield sits right beside junction 2 of the M40, with the A40 running through the Old Town and the A355 heading north to Amersham and south towards Slough. It's a quiet town, but the roads around it are anything but: the M40 here is four lanes each way, and the junction 2 roundabouts are busy at most hours. If a tyre bursts on the way back from London, or you find one flat on the drive in Holtspur before an early start, ring us. We take calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and send the closest available fitter with a tyre to fit where you are.

We aim to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases, though location and traffic around the M40 can change that. We'll give you a clear estimate when you phone.

Pulling over on the M40

A tyre failure at motorway speed is frightening, but the steps are simple:

  • Grip the wheel, ease off and steer gently towards the left. Signal early.
  • If the warning light comes on but the car feels fine, leave at junction 2 and stop in the services or a side road to check, rather than carrying on.
  • If you have to stop, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area, put the hazard lights on, exit through the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier, away from the car.
  • In an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. Stuck in a live lane and unable to get out safely? Stay in your seat with the belt on and hazards flashing, and call 999.

Our motorway flat tyre guide and our explanation of the tyre pressure warning light are both worth a read before a long run.

The A40, A355 and Old Town parking

The A40 through the town is a broad road lined with parking, while the A355 is faster, with stretches between villages where stopping is awkward. If a tyre gives way on the A355, slow down and turn off at the next roundabout or junction before stopping. In the Old Town, don't stop in the traffic lane of the A40 if you can avoid it; a parking bay or side street gives the fitter room to work safely and keeps you out of the flow. Around the station and New Town, choose a spot where the wheel that needs changing isn't on the traffic side.

The lanes out to Seer Green, Jordans and Knotty Green are narrower and darker after nightfall. There, a field entrance or a wide driveway mouth makes a better stopping place than a bend, and you should wait off the lane rather than beside the car.

Sorting the tyre at the roadside

When the fitter arrives they'll inspect the damage and explain the options. A small puncture in the central tread, 6 mm or less, on a tyre that hasn't been run flat, can often be repaired to British Standard guidance. Otherwise a new tyre goes on there and then, chosen from premium, mid-range or budget brands, each with the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and disposal of the old tyre are free. If the car can't be worked on safely, for example on a motorway, we can arrange breakdown recovery to move it first.

One thing to check while you wait: if your car has locking wheel nuts, find the key. It's often in the glovebox, under the boot floor or in a door pocket.
