When a tyre lets you down in Amersham

Amersham drivers cover a mix of roads in a single trip. You might come down the hill from Amersham-on-the-Hill into Old Amersham, join the A413 bypass towards Great Missenden, then head out along the A404 to Chorleywood and junction 18 of the M25, or take the A355 south to Beaconsfield. Any of those can be where a tyre fails, and so can a commuter car park late in the evening or a lane out near Coleshill. Whenever it happens, call us. We take calls day and night, all week, and send the nearest available fitter to replace the tyre where the car is.

We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Where you are and the traffic on the way both play a part, so we'll give you a straight answer on timing when you ring. Bank holidays, Sunday nights and the small hours are all covered in the same way as a weekday afternoon, so there's no need to wait until morning or leave the car somewhere overnight.

Safe stopping on the bypass and the A404

The A413 bypass and the A404 carry fast traffic, and on parts of them there's not much room to pull over. If you feel a tyre go:

  • Don't brake hard. Ease off, keep the car straight, and slow down gradually.
  • Get off the main road at the next roundabout, turning or lay-by, even if it means driving a short way at very low speed.
  • Once stopped, turn on the hazards, take everyone out on the side away from the traffic, and stand well back.
  • If you're already on the M25, stop on the hard shoulder or in an emergency area, leave by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. From an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000; if you've stopped in a live lane, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.

Down the hill and into the old town

The road linking the Hill to Old Amersham is steep, and the old High Street has parked cars along both sides. If a tyre goes as you're heading down, keep your speed low and find a side road or car park at the bottom rather than stopping on the slope. If you must stop on the hill, use the handbrake firmly, select first or park, and turn the wheels into the kerb. In the old town, pull in where you won't block a junction or narrow the road to one lane, and wait on the pavement.

On-the-spot repair or a new tyre

Our fitter checks the tyre before suggesting anything. A small puncture in the central tread, not more than 6 mm across, on a tyre that wasn't driven flat, can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance. If it can't, a new tyre is fitted there and then, from premium, mid-range or budget ranges, each with the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and disposal of the old tyre come free. Where the car is stuck somewhere unsafe to work, we can organise breakdown recovery.

Driving on run-flats? The car may feel normal even with no air in the tyre. Keep to the speed and distance limits in your handbook, and read whether run-flat tyres can be repaired. Tell us they're run-flats when you call so we bring the right type.

Before you call us

  1. Work out where you are: the road, the direction, and the nearest roundabout, station or village.
  2. Read the tyre size off the sidewall, for instance 225/50 R17, or have your registration ready.
  3. Note what happened: a loud bang, a gradual pull, or the warning light coming on.
  4. Check whether you have a locking wheel nut key and where it's kept.
