Tyre trouble in Liverpool tonight?

Maybe the van won't move off the yard near the docks, or a tyre blew on the M62 heading out of the city, or you came back to the car in Anfield after the match to find it sitting on the rim. Whatever time it is, phone us. We run a 24-hour line every day of the year and send out the closest available mobile fitter, who brings the tyre and the tools to you.

In most cases we aim to arrive within 60 minutes. That depends on the part of the city, the hour and what the traffic is doing, and we'll be straight with you about the likely wait.

Where you stop decides what you do next

Liverpool's roads range from motorways to cobbled back streets, and the safe thing to do changes with each:

  • M62, M57 or M58: pull onto the hard shoulder or an emergency area, switch on your hazards and get everyone out by the left-hand doors. Wait up the bank behind the barrier and don't attempt the wheel change. From an emergency area, or if the car came to a halt in a live lane, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if anyone is at risk.
  • The East Lancashire Road, Queens Drive or the dock road (A5036): these carry heavy, fast traffic and plenty of lorries. If the car still steers, slow down gradually and turn off into a side road, lay-by or car park instead of stopping on the carriageway.
  • Narrow terraced streets: park as tight to the kerb as you safely can, out of the way of buses and bin lorries, with your hazards on after dark.

Avoid driving on a flat to reach a "better" spot unless where you are is genuinely unsafe. A few hundred yards can ruin a repairable tyre and dent the rim.

Repair, replace or recover

The fitter looks at the damage first. A small puncture in the central tread that hasn't been driven on flat can often be repaired under British Standard guidance. Anything near the shoulder or in the sidewall, or a tyre that has come apart, means a replacement fitted there and then, from budget, mid-range or premium ranges with the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and taking away the old tyre are free. If the vehicle is somewhere a fitter can't work, we can organise breakdown recovery instead, taking it to a safer place or off the network altogether. Cars on run-flat tyres are a special case: many tyre makers advise against repairing them, so a replacement is the likely outcome.

Vans, loads and late finishes

Plenty of the vehicles on Liverpool's roads are working ones: delivery vans on multi-drop rounds, trades on the way to a site, support vehicles around the port. A loaded van that loses a tyre on the dock road can't wait until morning, and neither can a courier with parcels still on board. We fit van and light commercial tyres at the roadside, so have the full sidewall marking ready, including the load index after the size.

Slow leaks catch people out too: a tyre that drops a few psi a day until it finally gives up. If you've been topping one up, our article on slow puncture signs explains what's going on.

Locking nut key: without it the wheel stays on. It's normally in the glovebox, the door pocket or tucked in with the jack, so dig it out before the fitter turns up.

Across the city and out to the motorways

North of the centre we come out to Everton, Walton, Kirkdale and West Derby; to the south, Wavertree, Aigburth, Allerton, Woolton, Garston and Speke. On the motorways we cover the M62 from its start in the east of the city, the M57 around the city's eastern side, including the A580 junction near Kirkby, and the M58 towards Switch Island. Nearby, we also reach Bootle, St Helens and across the river to Birkenhead.
