Stranded with a tyre problem in Hull?

Hull is where the M62 runs out. The motorway becomes the A63 shortly before the city, continues as Clive Sullivan Way along the estuary and then Castle Street past the centre, before traffic heads east along Hedon Road, the A1033, towards the docks. The A15 brings drivers over the Humber Bridge from Lincolnshire, and the A1079 and A165 lead north towards Beverley and Bridlington. When a tyre goes on any of these, or on a residential street in the Avenues or Bransholme, ring us.

Calls are answered 24 hours a day, every day. We send the nearest available fitter with a new tyre and the tools to fit it at the roadside, at work or on your drive. We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases, though traffic and location can change that, and we'll give you an honest estimate.

How to wait safely on Hull's main routes

  • M62 towards Hull: use the hard shoulder or an emergency area, put the hazards on, get out through the left-hand doors and stand behind the barrier. From an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. Stopped in a live lane with no safe way out? Keep your belt on, hazards on, and call 999.
  • A63 and Hedon Road: heavy, fast traffic with plenty of lorries. Slow down and turn off at the next junction or into a side road or forecourt instead of stopping on the carriageway.
  • Out towards Holderness: the roads are flat and open but often unlit. Choose a straight stretch or a lay-by where you'll be seen early, and wait well clear of the car.

Our motorway flat tyre guide covers the safety steps in full.

Repairs, new tyres and recovery

The fitter checks the tyre before recommending anything. A small hole, under 6 mm and in the central three-quarters of the tread, on a tyre that hasn't been run flat, can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance. A damaged sidewall or a tyre driven on while flat needs replacing, and that can be done on the spot. There's a choice of premium, mid-range and budget tyres, all with the manufacturer's guarantee, and balancing and disposal of the old tyre are free.

If the car is somewhere it can't safely be worked on, our breakdown recovery can take it somewhere that it can.

Check for the locking nut key: most often it's in the glovebox or in the boot with the jack. The fitter needs it to remove the wheel.

Docks, building sites and screws in the tread

Hull has a lot of commercial traffic, with lorries and vans heading to and from the port along the A63 and Hedon Road, and construction work dotted across the city. That brings screws, nails and sharp scraps onto the road, and a tyre that picks one up often loses air slowly rather than all at once. You might notice the car feeling heavy on the steering, or find one tyre lower than the rest each morning. If you spot a screw head in the tread, leave it there; pulling it out can turn a slow leak into a flat. Whether it can be repaired depends on where it is, as our guide on nails and screws in tyres explains.
