Tyre trouble in Dartford right now?

If you're reading this beside a car with a flat, you're probably somewhere busy. Around Dartford that could mean the A2 near the Bean junction, a slip road at junction 1a, a queue on the A206 when the Crossing has backed up, or a residential road in Wilmington or Joyden's Wood at an hour when everything else is closed. Call us whenever it happens. We take calls 24/7, weekends included, and dispatch the nearest free fitter with a new tyre and the kit to put it on at the roadside.

We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Around here the traffic has a big say in that, so we'll tell you plainly how long we think it will take.

How to stop safely on Dartford's fast roads

  • M25 and the A282: pull onto the hard shoulder or, where there isn't one, into an emergency area or onto the verge. Hazards on, everyone out by the left-hand doors, and wait behind the barrier. If you've stopped in an emergency area or are stuck in a live lane, contact National Highways on 0300 123 5000. Don't change the wheel yourself. Our motorway breakdown guide explains each step.
  • On the Crossing itself: the bridge and tunnels have their own control room and recovery team, who will move you off. Call us once you've been taken somewhere safe.
  • On the A2 and the A225: ease off, signal and get to a lay-by, a junction or a side road. Stopping in a lane on the A2 with lorries behind you is the most dangerous option.

What can be done beside the car

Most jobs end with a new tyre fitted where the car has stopped. A nail or screw in the central part of the tread, on a tyre that hasn't been driven flat, may be repairable to British Standard guidance; our post on nails and screws in tyres sets out when that's possible. If the car is too close to fast traffic to work on, or the wheel is cracked or bent, we'll arrange breakdown recovery to move it.

We stock premium, mid-range and budget tyres for cars and vans, all carrying the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing the wheel and disposing of your old tyre are free.

When the Crossing jams, the town fills up

A closure or a breakdown at the Crossing quickly pushes traffic onto the local roads: the A206 past Stone and Greenhithe, the A226 and the streets around the town centre. Long periods of creeping traffic are hard on a tyre that's already losing air, and a slow puncture can finally give up in the queue. If the car starts to pull or feel heavy, turn off into a side road or a car park instead of stopping in the line of traffic, then call us with the street name. We'll be honest if the jams mean the fitter will take longer than usual. In the meantime, stay on the pavement side of the car, keep children and pets away from the road, and leave the hazards on so other drivers can see why you've stopped.

Locking wheel nuts: find the key before the fitter arrives. Check the glovebox, the door bins and the compartment under the boot floor. If it's gone, mention it when you ring.

Before you ring, have these to hand

  • Your location: road, junction, direction of travel, postcode or a what3words reference.
  • Which tyre is affected and how: flat, blown out, bulging, or the warning light on the dash.
  • The size printed on the side of the tyre, such as 205/55 R16, or the car's registration.
  • Whether everyone in the car is safely away from the traffic.
