Stranded with a tyre problem in Bexleyheath?
When a tyre gives out round here, it's often on the A2 or just off it. A blowout between the Danson and Black Prince interchanges, a tyre that tears on a slip road coming down onto Gravel Hill, or a car that won't move from a side street in Blendon late on a Saturday. Pick up the phone whatever the hour. We take calls through the night and every weekend, and send the closest free fitter with a replacement tyre and the tools to fit it where the car sits.
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Traffic on the A2 and Watling Street makes a difference, and we'll give you a fair estimate when you call.
Pulling off the A2 safely
Through Bexley the A2 is a fast dual carriageway and a red route, with slip roads that come and go quickly. If a tyre fails on it:
- Don't brake sharply. Hold the wheel steady, ease off and let the car slow down, with the hazards on.
- Leave at the next interchange if the car is still under control, then stop on a quieter road off the roundabout rather than on the slip road itself.
- If you have to stop on the main road, pull as far left as you can, get everyone out by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier or up the bank. If you can't get out safely, stay in with your seatbelt on and call 999.
Heading on towards the M25 at junction 2 or the Dartford Crossing, the motorway rules apply: hard shoulder or emergency area, hazards on, out on the left and behind the barrier, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 from an emergency area or a live lane. Our guide to a flat on the motorway has the detail.
Fixed where you've stopped
Usually our fitter puts a new tyre on right there, at the kerb, on your drive or in a car park. When the cause is a small puncture in the central part of the tread and the tyre hasn't been run flat, a repair to British Standard guidance may be possible instead. If your car is on run-flats, see our article on whether run-flat tyres can be repaired. Where the car can't be worked on safely, or the wheel is damaged, we'll arrange breakdown recovery.
We fit premium, mid-range and budget tyres, all with the manufacturer's guarantee, and balancing and removal of the old tyre come at no extra cost.
One thing to check while you wait: if the wheels have locking nuts, the key is needed to get them off. Look in the glovebox, the door pockets and the boot floor, and tell us if it's missing.
Saturday nights and the Broadway
The Broadway and the roads around the town centre stay busy well into the evening, and a tyre that has been losing air all week can finally go flat in a car park after the shops have shut. If you come back to a car sitting low, don't try to nurse it to a petrol station air line. A soft tyre driven even a short distance can overheat and damage the sidewall, which rules out a repair. Leave it parked, wait somewhere well lit, and call us with the car park name or the nearest street.
If it's a residential road, check the car isn't blocking a driveway or a dropped kerb, and let us know if it's parked tight against the kerb on the flat side.

The four things we will ask
- Your location: the street, the interchange or nearest junction, a postcode or a what3words reference.
- If you're on the A2, whether you were heading towards London or towards Kent.
- The size from the side of the tyre, for example 205/55 R16, or your registration.
- What has happened: a flat, a blowout, a bulge or a warning light.
