Coventry flat tyre help, any hour of the day
A Coventry tyre emergency can start almost anywhere: on the inner ring road with slip roads coming at you every few hundred metres, on the A46 eastern bypass at speed, at a car park after a night shift, or outside the house in Tile Hill on a frosty morning. Wherever it happens, phone us. Calls are taken at all hours, seven days a week, and the nearest fitter who is free sets off with a replacement tyre and everything needed to fit it on the spot.
In most cases we aim to reach you within 60 minutes, although the time of day, your location and traffic around the city all play a part. We'll tell you plainly what to expect.
Staying safe on the ring road, the M6 and the bypasses
- M6 near Walsgrave: the stretch between junction 2 (where the M69 joins) and junction 4 is a smart motorway, and parts of it have no permanent hard shoulder. If there's a hard shoulder, use it; if not, get to an emergency area or leave at the next exit if the car can manage it slowly. Switch on the hazards, leave through the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. From an emergency area, or if you're stuck in a live lane, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you can't get out safely, keep your seatbelt fastened, keep the hazards on and ring 999.
- Inner ring road: junctions are close together and there's almost nowhere to stop. If you can, take the next slip road off at low speed and pull into the first side street or car park. Don't try to change a wheel on the ring road itself.
- A45 and A46: these dual carriageways carry fast traffic around the south and east of the city. Head for a lay-by or the next junction, then get out on the verge side and stand back from the road.
Our guide to a flat tyre on the motorway goes through the motorway steps in more detail.
How we deal with the tyre once we're there
First the fitter checks whether a repair is possible. Following British Standard guidance, that means a puncture under 6 mm in the central three-quarters of the tread, on a tyre that hasn't been driven flat. Anything else, such as a gash in the sidewall, a bulge or a tyre that has been run on its rim, gets replaced there and then with a new premium, mid-range or budget tyre carrying the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and taking the old tyre away cost nothing extra.
When the car can't be worked on where it stopped, for instance in an emergency area or with a cracked alloy, breakdown recovery can move it to a safe place first.
Nails, screws and the slow leak that finally gives up
With a lot of building work and trade traffic around the city, plenty of Coventry flats start with a screw picked up days before. The tyre loses a little air at a time, then lets go on a fast road when it's warm and flexing. If one tyre keeps needing air, read our guide to slow puncture signs, leave any object in the tread where it is, and get it looked at before it fails somewhere awkward.
Find the locking nut key now: if your wheels have a locking nut, the adaptor is often in the glovebox, a door pocket or under the boot floor. Without it the wheel stays on.
Details to give us on the phone
- Exactly where you are: the ring road junction you left by, a street and postcode, or a pin shared on WhatsApp.
- Which way you were travelling, if you're on the M6, the A45 or the A46.
- The size printed on the tyre wall, such as 205/55 R16, or your registration.
- Whether you and any passengers are off the road and somewhere safe.
