Cardiff emergency tyre call-outs, day or night
Cardiff sits just south of the M4, with junctions 29 to 33 feeding traffic into the city, and the A470 and the A48(M) carrying commuters in every morning. A tyre can give up anywhere along those routes: a blowout on the motorway near junction 32, a flat discovered on a Splott street before the school run, or a warning light on the way home to Pontprennau after a late shift. Ring us whenever it happens. We take calls 24 hours a day, every day, and send the nearest free fitter with a tyre and the kit to fit it where you are.
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Traffic on match days and in the city centre rush can slow things down, so we'll give you a fair estimate when you call.
Keeping safe on the M4 and the A470
Your first job is to get out of harm's way. How you do that depends on the road:
- On the M4: pull onto the hard shoulder, switch on the hazard lights and get out on the left-hand side. Wait behind the barrier, up the bank if there is one, and don't try to change the wheel. The motorway in Wales is run by Traffic Wales, not National Highways; to report an urgent incident call them on 0300 123 1213, and if anyone is in danger or the car is stuck in a live lane, call 999. Our page on a flat tyre on the motorway covers the full routine.
- On the A470, the A48(M) or the A4232: these are fast roads with short slip lanes. Ease off and leave at the next exit or pull into a lay-by, rather than stopping on the carriageway.
- On city streets: many built-up roads in Wales now have a 20mph default limit, which helps if a tyre goes. Pull in clear of junctions, bus lanes and cycle lanes.
New tyre, repair or recovery
The fitter will look at the tyre and explain your options. If there's a small puncture in the central three-quarters of the tread and the tyre hasn't been driven flat, a repair to British Standard guidance may be fine. Otherwise we fit a replacement at the kerbside. If the car is somewhere it can't be worked on, such as a hard shoulder or a tight spot with traffic squeezing past, breakdown recovery can take it somewhere safer.
Choose from premium, mid-range and budget tyres, each with the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and disposal of your old tyre are included free.
Find the key now: if your wheels have locking nuts, look for the key in the glovebox, centre console or boot while you wait. Without it the fitter can't take the wheel off.
Why city miles and motorway miles don't mix well
Lots of Cardiff cars spend the week stop-starting through the centre and then do a fast run along the M4 towards Newport, Bristol or Swansea at the weekend. Kerbing, potholes and debris in town can leave a tyre with damage you can't see, and a sustained motorway speed is what finally exposes it. A pressure warning on the dashboard is often the first sign; if it comes on, our explainer on the tyre pressure warning light tells you what to check before going further.
Cardiff districts and nearby towns we cover
We come out to every corner of the city, including Llanishen, Pontprennau, Canton, Ely and Splott, and the main roads around them: the M4 from junction 29 to 33, the A48(M), the A470 and the A4232 peripheral route. We also cover nearby towns such as Penarth, Caerphilly and Newport.
Details to give us on the phone
- Where you are: the road or junction number and direction, a postcode or a what3words location.
- What's gone wrong: a puncture, a blowout, a split sidewall or a warning light.
- The size from the side of the tyre, such as 225/40 R18, or your reg number.
- Whether you're safely away from traffic.
