Need a tyre fitted urgently in Tring?
Tring is a small town with some fast and some very quiet roads around it. The A41 bypass skirts the south side as a dual carriageway, part of a continuous run from the M25 to Aylesbury. To the north, the B488 Icknield Way heads out past the town towards Ivinghoe, crossing the canal and the railway, while lanes wind off to Aldbury, Wigginton and Wilstone. If a tyre lets you down on any of them, ring us. We answer 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and send the nearest mobile fitter with a replacement tyre to where the car is.
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases, depending on location and traffic. We'll give you an honest estimate before anyone sets off.
Making yourself safe around Tring
- A41 bypass: it carries fast traffic in both directions. Slow down gently with the hazards on and leave at the next junction, such as Tring Hill at the western end, if the car will get there. If you have to stop at the side, everyone should get out on the verge side and wait up the bank, well clear of the road.
- Icknield Way and the B-roads: outside the town these are rural roads with bends, few lay-bys and little lighting at night. Pull in on a straight where you can be seen, keep the lights on and wait off the road.
- The lanes to Aldbury and the station: many are narrow and dark at night. Stop in a passing place or gateway if there is one, and don't stand in the road.
If you're further afield on a motorway, our motorway flat tyre guide explains hard shoulders, emergency areas and when to call National Highways. Whatever the road, avoid driving on the flat tyre: it will usually be ruined within a short distance.
On-the-spot repair or replacement
The fitter checks the tyre when they arrive. A clean puncture in the central three-quarters of the tread, under 6 mm across, can usually be repaired to British Standard guidance, provided the tyre hasn't been run flat. If it can't, a new tyre goes on there and then, from a choice of premium, mid-range and budget brands, with the manufacturer's guarantee. We balance the wheel and dispose of the old tyre free. If the car is stuck somewhere it can't be worked on, breakdown recovery can move it first.
Have the locking nut key ready: if your wheels have locking nuts, look in the glovebox, under the boot floor or in the jack case. The fitter needs it to get the wheel off.
Coming back to a soft tyre after a walk
Tring Reservoirs, Tring Park and the hills around Aldbury draw walkers all year, and plenty of them park on a verge or in a rough car park. Chalk country is full of flints, and a sharp one pressed into the tread on the way in can leave the tyre noticeably soft by the time you get back to the car, often as the light fades. Before you drive off, walk round the car. If one tyre looks lower than the others, don't try to make it home on it. Read about slow puncture signs and give us a call instead.
Tring and the villages we serve
We cover the town and the countryside around it, including Aldbury, Wigginton, Wilstone, Long Marston and the area around Tring station, and out towards Ivinghoe and Pitstone. Roads include the A41 bypass, the B488 Icknield Way, the B4635 and the lanes in between. We also cover Berkhamsted, Aylesbury and Wendover.
Details that help the fitter find you
- Your location. On a lane with no name, a what3words reference or a pin dropped on WhatsApp works best.
- The size printed on the tyre, for example 205/50 R17, or your car's registration.
- What you can see: a flint or nail, a cut, a bulge or simply a flat tyre.
- Whether you're off the road and safe while you wait.
