Help for a tyre emergency in Leighton Buzzard and Linslade
When a tyre gives out near Leighton Buzzard, it's often on a bypass or a lane rather than in town. Perhaps the tyre went on the A505 heading for Dunstable, a sharp flint caught you on the road through Stanbridge, or you came back to the station car park in Linslade after a late train to find one corner sitting on the rim. Pick up the phone whatever the hour. We take calls around the clock, every day, and send the nearest fitter with a suitable tyre to fit it where the car is.
We aim to get to you within 60 minutes in most cases, depending on location and traffic. On rural roads it can take a little longer, and we'll say so when you ring.
Where to wait on the bypasses, the A5 and the lanes
- A505 and A4146 bypasses: much of the southern bypass is single carriageway with fast traffic, while the A4146 past Linslade and Stoke Hammond is dual carriageway. Get to a lay-by, roundabout exit or side road at walking pace if you can. If you must stop on the verge, use the hazard lights and stand well back from the road, behind a barrier where there is one.
- The A5 and the link road to the M1: the Dunstable Northern Bypass joins the M1 at junction 11a. On the motorway itself, stop on the hard shoulder or in an emergency area, turn on the hazard lights, leave through the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. Call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 if you're in an emergency area or a live lane.
- Country lanes: tuck into a field gateway or a wide verge, leave the hazards and sidelights on and keep everyone out of the road. A hi-vis vest from the boot is worth wearing at night.
What happens when the fitter gets to you
Usually the damaged tyre is swapped for a new one at the roadside. If it's a small puncture in the central tread and the tyre hasn't been driven on while flat, it may be possible to repair it, following British Standard guidance. If the car has come to rest somewhere too dangerous to work, such as on a bend with no verge, our breakdown recovery can move it before anything else is done.
Tyres are available in budget, mid-range and premium brands, each with the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and disposal of the old tyre are included at no charge.
Worth checking now: if your car has locking wheel nuts, look for the key. It usually lives in the glovebox or in the tray around the jack. Without it the wheel stays on.
Slow leaks that turn into flats overnight
Thorns from hedge trimming and stones on the lanes around Heath and Reach and Billington tend to cause slow leaks rather than instant blowouts. The tyre can lose a little air each day until one morning it's flat on the drive. If you've been topping one tyre up more often than the rest, it's a sign worth acting on. Our guide to slow punctures covers what to look for, and the sooner we see a leaking tyre the more likely it can be repaired rather than replaced.
If you find a tyre flat first thing, don't try to drive it to a garage in town. Leave the car where it is and we'll come to the drive, which gives the tyre the best chance of being saved.
Towns, villages and roads covered

To help the fitter, have these ready:
- Your location: the road number, nearest village or roundabout, or a pin dropped on WhatsApp.
- What happened: a sudden flat, a slow leak, a damaged sidewall or a dashboard warning.
- The tyre size from the sidewall, for example 195/55 R16, or the registration number.
- Whether you're off the road and safe.
