A tyre gone in Dunstable, right now
Since the A5-M1 link road and junction 11a opened in 2017, a lot of Dunstable traffic reaches motorway speed within a few minutes of leaving home. Add the warehouses around Woodside and Houghton Regis running through the night, and the steep road down off the Downs, and there are plenty of ways for a tyre to let go at an awkward hour. When it does, ring us. The phone is answered around the clock, seven days a week, and we send a mobile fitter with a replacement tyre to wherever the car has stopped.
We aim to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases. Traffic and the exact spot both make a difference, so we'll tell you honestly what to expect before the fitter leaves.
Stopping safely on the link road, the A5 and the Downs
Where you are decides what to do first. Don't carry on driving to find a garage: a flat tyre can be ruined in a few hundred yards, and so can the rim.
- M1 around junctions 11 and 11a: get onto the hard shoulder, or into an emergency area if there's no hard shoulder, and put the hazard lights on. Everyone should get out through the left-hand doors and stand behind the barrier, away from the traffic. Never try to change a wheel there. Our guide to a flat on the motorway explains the rest, including what to do if you're stuck in a live lane.
- The A5-M1 link or the Woodside Link: these are fast roads with few places to stop. Ease off, keep the hazards on and carry on gently to the next roundabout, junction or verge wide enough to get the car clear of the carriageway.
- The B4541 over Dunstable Downs: the descent into town is steep, and there are blind sections near the top. Pull in only where oncoming drivers can see you, and leave the car in gear with the handbrake hard on.
Repair, replacement or a lift
The fitter looks at the damage first. A clean puncture in the middle three-quarters of the tread, no wider than 6 mm, on a tyre that hasn't been run flat, can often be repaired to British Standard guidance. A torn sidewall, a blowout or a tyre driven on for a mile means a new tyre, fitted on the spot from a premium, mid-range or budget range. Balancing and disposal of the damaged tyre come free, and the new one carries the manufacturer's guarantee.
Sometimes the car simply can't be worked on where it sits, perhaps in a motorway emergency area or with a bent wheel. Then breakdown recovery can take it somewhere safe to finish the job.
Find the locking nut key now: look in the glovebox, the door pockets and under the boot floor beside the jack. If the wheels have locking nuts and the key has gone missing, tell us when you ring.
Night shifts, lorries and debris
Dunstable and Houghton Regis are home to large distribution and industrial sites, and the lorries serving them shed bits of strapping, metal and broken pallet onto the approach roads. A screw picked up on an industrial estate rarely causes an instant flat. More often the tyre loses air slowly through a shift and is soft by the time you walk back to the car at two in the morning. If a tyre keeps going down a little every few days, read about slow puncture signs and get it checked before it fails on the link road.
Dunstable districts and roads we reach
We come out across the town, from the centre and the residential streets around it to the industrial estates on the Houghton Regis side, plus Houghton Regis itself, Caddington, Kensworth and Totternhoe. On the road network that includes the M1 at junctions 11 and 11a, the A5 Watling Street, the A505 towards Leighton Buzzard and the B489 out to the villages at the foot of the Chilterns. Nearby, we also cover Luton, Leighton Buzzard and Tring.
Details that speed up a roadside visit
- Your position: road name, the nearest junction or roundabout, or a what3words reference.
- The size printed on the tyre wall, such as 205/55 R16. If it's dark or the tyre is shredded, give us the reg.
- What you can see: a nail, a split, a bulge, or a tyre that's simply flat.
- Whether you and any passengers are out of the traffic.
