A flat tyre around Thame, at any hour

Around Thame, a tyre emergency usually means a country road rather than a busy street. You might be on the A418 between Haddenham and the bypass, on an unlit stretch towards Long Crendon after an evening out, or on the A329 heading for the M40 before sunrise. Wherever the car has stopped, ring us. The phone is answered day and night, weekends and bank holidays included, and we send whichever fitter is closest with a matching tyre and the equipment to change it on the spot.

Our aim is to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases. Out in the villages it can take longer, depending on the lanes and the time of day, so we'll tell you honestly what to expect before anyone sets off.

Waiting safely on Thame's roads

How you wait matters more than how fast the tyre is changed. A few pointers for the roads people use most here:

  • M40 near junctions 6 to 8: stop on the hard shoulder or in an emergency area, put the hazard lights on and get everyone out through the doors on the left. Climb behind the safety barrier and stay there. If you've ended up in an emergency area or a live lane, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 as well as us. Remember that junction 7 is a restricted junction, so tell us which direction you were heading. Our guide to a flat on the motorway explains each step.
  • The bypass and the A418: traffic moves quickly and verges are narrow in places. If the car is still drivable at a crawl, ease into the next lay-by, junction or farm entrance rather than stopping on the carriageway.
  • Village lanes after dark: keep sidelights and hazards on, stand well away from the car on the verge or in a gateway, and don't wait between the vehicle and oncoming traffic.

What the fitter can sort out where you've stopped

In the majority of cases the job finishes with a new tyre fitted at the roadside and you driving away. If the problem is a small puncture in the central part of the tread and the tyre wasn't driven on while flat, a repair to British Standard guidance may be possible instead. Where the car can't be worked on safely, such as a tight bend with no verge or a live lane, we can arrange breakdown recovery to move it first.

You can choose a budget, mid-range or premium tyre. Each new tyre has the manufacturer's guarantee, and balancing plus disposal of the damaged one cost nothing extra.

Before the fitter arrives: if your wheels use locking nuts, find the adaptor key now. It's often in the glovebox, the boot floor or a door pocket. The wheel can't come off without it.

Rural punctures and the spare that isn't there

Hedge cuttings, flints and farm debris on the lanes between Thame, Towersey and Kingsey are a common source of punctures, and many newer cars carry only a sealant kit instead of a spare. Sealant can get you a short way on a small hole, but it won't help with a sidewall cut or a blowout, and some tyres can't be repaired once it's been used. If you're unsure whether it's safe to drive on, read about slow puncture signs, or simply stay put and call.

Villages and roads we come out to

We cover the whole town and the villages around it, including Haddenham, Long Crendon, Towersey, Kingsey, Shabbington, Tetsworth and Milton Common. We also attend the A418, the A4129, the A329 and the M40 around junctions 6, 7 and 8, and we're regularly out in neighbouring Chinnor, Wheatley and Aylesbury.

Details that help us find you

  1. The nearest village, road number or postcode. On a lane, a what3words location or a pin shared on WhatsApp works well.
  2. What went wrong: a sudden bang, a gradual loss of pressure, a visible bulge or a dashboard warning.
  3. The tyre size printed on the sidewall, such as 205/55 R16. If you can't see it, your registration will do.
  4. Whether the car is somewhere safe or partly in the road.
