Newark-on-Trent flat tyres, day and night
Newark is where the A1 and the A46 meet, with the A17 heading east towards Sleaford and the A616 and A617 running north-west. A lot of the traffic is just passing through: lorries on the Great North Road, families on long trips north or south, drivers using the A46 between Nottingham and Lincoln. A tyre failure on any of these routes, often miles from a garage that's open, is exactly when you need someone who can come to you. Call us and we'll send the nearest free fitter, at any hour, with a tyre to fit where the car has stopped.
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. It depends on your location and the traffic, especially around the busy roundabouts, and we'll give you an honest estimate.
Waiting safely on the A1, the A46 and around the roundabouts
- On the A1: fast and heavy with lorries. If you can, keep rolling slowly to the next junction or lay-by. If you must stop on the verge, pull right over, put the hazards on, leave by the doors away from the traffic and wait behind the barrier or well back from the road.
- On the A46 and near the Cattle Market or Farndon roundabouts: traffic queues and merges here. Clear the roundabout, then pull into the first safe side road or lay-by. Don't stop on the roundabout itself.
- On a rural road such as the A17 or the lanes out to the villages: pick a straight stretch where you can be seen, get well off the carriageway and keep the hazards on.
- On a motorway further along your journey: use the hard shoulder or an emergency area, exit by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. In an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000; if you're stuck in a live lane, stay belted in and call 999.
What we can do when we get there
The fitter starts by checking the tyre. If the puncture is below 6 mm, in the central three-quarters of the tread, and the tyre hasn't been driven flat, it can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance. Otherwise, a new tyre goes on straight away, from budget to premium, all with the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and disposal of the old tyre are included at no extra cost.
If the car has stopped somewhere it can't be safely worked on, or the wheel is damaged, we can organise breakdown recovery to move it first.
Towing or loaded up? If you're pulling a caravan or trailer, tell us when you call, and find the locking wheel nut key for the car before the fitter arrives. It's usually in the glovebox.
Long trips, heavy loads and tyre heat
If you're coming through Newark part-way through a long journey, the car may well have a full boot or a trailer behind it. Extra weight and sustained speed both heat up the tyres, and a tyre that's a little underinflated can overheat and fail. Before a long run on the A1, set your pressures to the loaded figures in the handbook, checked when the tyres are cold. If the car starts to feel vague or you hear a rhythmic thump, pull over somewhere safe and take a look. Our article on slow puncture signs covers the early warnings.
Newark and the surrounding villages
We cover the town centre and areas including Balderton, Fernwood, Coddington, Farndon, Winthorpe and Collingham, plus the villages along the A46 and A617. Our fitters work along the A1, the A46, the A17, the A616, the A617 and the B6166. Nearby places with their own pages include Grantham, Lincoln and Mansfield.
Information we'll ask for
- Your location, including the road, the direction of travel and the nearest roundabout, junction or village.
- What has happened: a flat, a blowout, a bulge or a warning light.
- The tyre size from the sidewall, or the registration number.
- Whether you're towing, and whether you're off the road and safe.
