Lincoln tyre emergencies, sorted where you've stopped

Lincoln has no motorway, but it has plenty of fast roads and long, dark stretches between villages. The bypasses that now loop round the city carry traffic at speed, the A46 heads south-west towards Newark, and beyond the edge of town many routes are unlit country roads. A tyre can let go on any of them, at any time. When it does, ring us. We take calls all day and all night, seven days a week, and the closest available fitter comes out with a replacement tyre to fit on the spot.

We aim to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases. Out in the villages it can take a little longer, and we'll tell you honestly what to expect.

Staying safe on the bypasses and country roads

  • On the A46 or the eastern bypass: these are fast roads with lorries and farm traffic. Slow down gradually and pull into a lay-by, a side road or the next roundabout exit. Once stopped, put the hazards on and get everyone out on the side away from the traffic, then stand well back from the carriageway.
  • On an unlit rural road: pull as far off the road as you safely can, away from bends and the brow of a hill so other drivers see you in good time. Hazards on, sidelights on, and keep clear of the car if there's room to stand on a verge or in a gateway.
  • On a motorway further afield: use the hard shoulder or an emergency area, leave by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. From an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000; if you're stuck in a live lane, stay belted in and dial 999.
  • On a steep street near the Cathedral Quarter: handbrake on hard, turn the front wheels into the kerb and leave it in gear or in park.

Our options when we arrive

The fitter's first decision is whether the tyre can be saved. A puncture smaller than 6 mm, sitting in the central three-quarters of the tread, is often repairable under British Standard guidance, as long as the tyre hasn't been driven on while flat. Damage to the sidewall or shoulder, a bulge or a tyre ruined by the rim means a new one, fitted then and there. We carry budget, mid-range and premium tyres, all covered by the manufacturer's guarantee, and balancing and taking the old tyre away are free.

Where a car is on a bend with no verge, or the wheel itself is bent, we can arrange breakdown recovery to get it somewhere safe first.

Waiting in the dark: keep a torch and a warm layer in the car. While you wait, use the torch to find your locking wheel nut key, which is usually in the glovebox or by the jack.

Run-flats, inflation kits and no spare

Many newer cars leave the factory without a spare wheel. Some have run-flat tyres that let you drive a short distance at reduced speed, others just an inflation kit. On a long country road out of Lincoln, that can leave you with fewer options than you'd expect. A run-flat that has been driven on after losing pressure usually needs replacing rather than repairing; our article on whether run-flat tyres can be repaired explains why. Either way, we can bring the right tyre out to you.

Lincoln and the surrounding villages

We cover the city, from uphill around the Bailgate and Ermine to downhill areas such as the Brayford, Boultham and Bracebridge, as well as Birchwood, North Hykeham, Waddington, Bracebridge Heath, Nettleham and Saxilby. On the roads, that's the A46, the A15 eastern bypass from Sleaford Road to Wragby Road, the A57, the A158 and the A15 north. Nearby towns with their own pages include Gainsborough, Newark-on-Trent and Sleaford.

Helping us find you

  1. Your location. On a rural road, a what3words reference, a village name or the nearest junction is ideal.
  2. What happened to the tyre, and whether you've driven on it since.
  3. The tyre size from the sidewall, or your registration if it's hard to read in the dark.
  4. Whether you're off the road and somewhere safe.
