Mansfield drivers: help with a flat, 24 hours a day

Getting in and out of Mansfield usually means one of a handful of roads: the A38 to junction 28 of the M1, the A617 to junction 29 or east through Rainworth towards Newark, or the A60 south to Nottingham. Lots of people commute along them early and late, and a tyre failure in the dark on one of these routes is not something to sort out alone. Call us and we'll send the nearest available fitter, day or night, weekday or weekend, with a replacement tyre to fit where you've stopped.

We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. That depends on where you are and how busy the roads are, so we'll give you a fair estimate on the phone.

Safe places to stop around Mansfield

  • On the M1 at junction 28 or 29: move onto the hard shoulder, or into an emergency area if there isn't one. Put the hazards on, get out by the passenger-side doors and wait behind the barrier. From an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you're stuck in a live lane and can't get out safely, stay in your seat with the belt on and the hazards flashing, and ring 999.
  • On the A38, A617 or A6191: traffic moves quickly on these routes. Indicate, slow down gently and stop in a lay-by, a side road or at the next roundabout exit, not on a narrow verge.
  • Towards Sherwood Forest and Clipstone: roads through the forest are dark at night with few places to pull in. Find the first wide, straight spot, switch on the hazards and stand away from the road.

On-the-spot repair or a new tyre

When the fitter gets to you, they'll check whether the tyre can be repaired. If the puncture is less than 6 mm across, in the central three-quarters of the tread, and the tyre hasn't been driven on flat, a repair following British Standard guidance may be possible. If not, you'll get a new tyre fitted there and then, with a choice of budget, mid-range and premium brands, all with the manufacturer's guarantee. We balance the wheel and dispose of the old tyre for free.

If there's nowhere safe for the fitter to work, or the wheel is damaged too, breakdown recovery can move the car first.

Locking wheel nuts: the fitter can't remove a locked wheel without its key. Check the glovebox, the boot floor and any storage trays while you wait, and let us know if you can't find it.

Screws, nails and repairable punctures

Wherever there's building work or a busy trade yard, screws and nails find their way onto the road, and from there into tyres. Estate roads and site entrances are the usual places to pick one up. A screw in the tread often holds the air in for a while, so you may only notice when the tyre is soft in the morning. Leave it where it is and don't keep driving on a tyre that's losing air, because running it soft damages the inside of the sidewall and can turn a simple repair into a replacement. Our article on repairing a tyre with a nail or screw in it explains when a repair is possible.
