Tyre gone in Chesterfield? Ring us, whatever the time
Chesterfield sits between the M1 and the edge of the Peak District, so drivers here face a bit of everything: motorway traffic at junctions 29, 29A and 30, the busy A61 running north to south through town, and the A619 and A632 climbing west into hilly country. A tyre that fails late in the evening on any of these roads needs sorting quickly, and that's what we're here for. Phone us at any hour, any day. We send the nearest fitter who's free, with a new tyre and the kit to fit it at the roadside, at work or outside your home.
In most cases we aim to reach you within 60 minutes. Location, traffic and the time of day all affect that, and we'll be straight with you about timing.
Before anything else: get yourself safe
- M1 around Chesterfield: pull onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area. Switch on the hazard lights, get out using the left-side doors and wait up the bank behind the barrier. If you're in an emergency area, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you've come to a stop in a live lane and it isn't safe to get out, keep your seatbelt fastened, hazards on, and call 999.
- A61 and A617: fast, busy roads linking the town with the motorway, Sheffield and Mansfield. Slow down smoothly, signal and get off at the next junction or into a safe lay-by.
- A619 and A632 towards the hills: bends, gradients and unlit sections. Choose a straight stretch with a wide verge or a lay-by so traffic can see you, and stand well clear of the car.

Repair if possible, replace if not
Once the fitter has had a look, they'll tell you what can be done. A small hole under 6 mm in the central three-quarters of the tread, on a tyre that hasn't been driven flat, can normally be repaired following British Standard guidance. Otherwise, they'll fit a new tyre straight away: premium, mid-range or budget, each with the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and getting rid of the old tyre come free.
If the car can't be worked on safely where it's stopped, perhaps on a narrow hill road or a slip road, we can arrange breakdown recovery instead.
Don't forget the key: wheels with locking nuts can only be removed with the matching key. Find it in the glovebox or boot while you wait, so the fitter can start straight away.
Hills, potholes and damaged sidewalls
The roads heading west from Chesterfield take a toll on tyres. Winter weather breaks up the surface, potholes appear on the climbs, and a sharp edge can split a sidewall without you noticing at first. Look for a bulge or a cut on the side of the tyre after a hard hit. Sidewall damage can't be repaired, and a bulge can turn into a blowout, so don't drive far on it. Cold mornings also drop tyre pressures, which means a tyre that seemed fine in September can be noticeably soft by December and more likely to be damaged by the next pothole. If you notice the car pulling or a tyre losing air over a few days, our article on signs of a slow puncture is worth a read.
