Tyre trouble in Sheffield? We answer at any hour

Sheffield throws a lot at a tyre. There's the M1 along the eastern edge with junctions 33, 34 and 35, the Parkway running in from junction 33, the outer ring road, and then the climbs: Manchester Road out towards the moors, the steep streets around Crookes and Gleadless, and the A616 Stocksbridge bypass heading for the Woodhead Pass. A tyre can fail on any of them, and it rarely picks a sensible time.

Whenever it happens, phone us. Someone picks up 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and we send the closest fitter who's available, carrying a new tyre and everything needed to fit it on the spot. In most cases we aim to be there within 60 minutes. Traffic, your exact location and the hour all play a part, so we'll give you an honest idea of timing when you ring.

Stopping safely on hills, the Parkway and the M1

  • On the M1: steer onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area. Hazards on, then get out on the side away from traffic and wait behind the barrier, up the bank if there is one. In an emergency area, ring National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you're stuck in a live lane and it isn't safe to leave the car, keep your seatbelt on, hazards flashing, and call 999. Don't attempt the wheel change yourself.
  • On the Parkway or the A616: these are quick dual carriageways. Slow down gradually and take the next exit or lay-by instead of halting on the main road.
  • On a steep street: stop where you can be seen and aren't blocking a bus route or junction. Handbrake on firmly, leave it in gear or in park, and turn the front wheels towards the kerb.

Repair, replacement or recovery

The fitter looks at the tyre before deciding anything. If the hole is under 6 mm, within the central three-quarters of the tread and the tyre hasn't been driven on while flat, a repair to British Standard guidance is usually possible. Damage to the sidewall, a large cut or a tyre that's been run flat means a replacement, fitted there and then. You can choose premium, mid-range or budget, all with the manufacturer's guarantee, and balancing plus disposal of the old tyre are free.

On a gradient too steep to jack the car safely, or if the wheel itself is damaged, we can arrange breakdown recovery to take the car somewhere level.

Locking wheel nuts: while you're waiting, track down the key. Look in the glovebox, centre console and the spare wheel well. Without it the fitter can't get the wheel off.

Kerbs, potholes and steep climbs

On Sheffield's hillier streets, cars are often parked tight against high kerbs, and a scrape when pulling away can gouge a sidewall. Add potholes that open up on the climbs after a cold spell and you get damage that doesn't always show straight away. A tyre that seemed fine at the bottom of the hill can be sitting low by the next morning. If you hit something hard, check for a bulge or split on the side of the tyre before you carry on, because sidewall damage can't be repaired and a bulge can fail without warning. A dashboard warning light is often the first clue; our explainer on the tyre pressure warning light says what it means and what to do.
