Rotherham roadside tyre emergencies, any time
Rotherham sits where the M1 and M18 meet, with the A630 Centenary Way carrying traffic through the town and the A631 Bawtry Road linking it to junction 1 of the M18. Between the motorways, the retail parks and the routes into Sheffield and Doncaster, there are plenty of places for a tyre to fail. If yours has just gone, whether at midnight on the M1 near Thorpe Hesley or first thing on the drive in Wickersley, give us a ring.
We take calls 24/7, weekends and bank holidays included, and dispatch the nearest fitter who's free with a tyre and the equipment to fit it at the roadside. We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases, depending on traffic and where you are, and we'll tell you honestly how long it's likely to be.
Keeping yourself safe until we arrive
- M1 or M18: move onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area if you can. Switch the hazards on, get everyone out via the left-hand doors and go behind the barrier. If you've stopped in an emergency area, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000. In a live lane with no safe way out, stay in your seat with the belt on and hazards going, and call 999. Never try to swap the wheel on the motorway yourself.
- Centenary Way and the A631: both carry fast traffic. Drop your speed steadily, signal early and find a side road or lay-by.
- Estates and car parks: stop somewhere level and out of the way, put the handbrake on and wait in a safe spot, not beside the car on the traffic side.
Our motorway flat tyre article has the full checklist.
What happens when the fitter gets there
The fitter first works out whether the tyre can be saved. A small puncture, under 6 mm and in the central three-quarters of the tread, on a tyre that hasn't been driven flat, is usually repairable following British Standard guidance. Anything else gets a new tyre fitted on the spot, chosen from premium, mid-range or budget ranges and backed by the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and removal of the old tyre are included at no charge.
If the vehicle can't be worked on safely where it's stopped, for instance on a narrow slip road, we'll arrange breakdown recovery.
Have the locking nut key ready: many cars need a special key to remove one nut on each wheel. It usually lives in the glovebox or with the tool kit in the boot.
Debris on the motorway corridor
With so much freight using the M1 and M18 around Rotherham, bits of metal, lost load and shredded truck tyres end up on the carriageway and hard shoulder. A sharp fragment can cause an instant blowout or leave a screw or nail that lets the air out slowly over a day or two. If you find something stuck in the tread, don't pull it out; leave it in place and call us. Whether it can be fixed depends on where it is and how big the hole is, which our article on tyres with a nail or screw in them explains. A tyre that keeps needing air every few days is worth a look before it lets you down on the motorway at night, when the hard shoulder is the last place you want to be waiting.
