Barnsley tyre emergencies, any hour of the day

Barnsley sits on the M1 with three junctions of its own: 36 at Tankersley, 37 at Dodworth and 38 to the north. From junction 37 the A628 runs into the town and, the other way, climbs west towards the Woodhead Pass and Manchester. The A6195 Dearne Valley Parkway leaves junction 36 for Wombwell and the Dearne towns, and the A61 links Barnsley with Wakefield and Sheffield. Between the motorway, the moorland roads and the town's own hills, there's plenty of scope for a tyre to fail.

If yours has, call us. We take calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and send the closest available fitter with a replacement tyre and the tools to fit it on the spot. We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Where you are, the hour and the traffic make a difference, and we'll tell you honestly how long it should be.

Staying safe while you wait

  • On the M1: get onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area and switch on the hazards. Leave the car through the left-hand doors and go behind the barrier. If you're in an emergency area, ring National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you're stopped in a live lane and can't get out safely, keep your belt on and hazards flashing, and call 999.
  • Dearne Valley Parkway and the A61: quick roads with plenty of roundabouts. Slow down and turn off into a side road or lay-by instead of stopping on the main carriageway.
  • The A628 towards Penistone and the moors: exposed, often dark and with long gradients. Find a lay-by or a wide, straight verge where you'll be seen, and wait away from the car.

Our motorway flat tyre guide has more on this.

On-the-spot repair, replacement or recovery

First, the fitter checks the tyre. A puncture under 6 mm in the central three-quarters of the tread, in a tyre that hasn't been driven flat, can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance. Otherwise, they'll fit a new tyre there and then, from premium, mid-range or budget brands, each with the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and disposal of the old tyre are free.

If the car is somewhere it can't safely be jacked up, such as a steep verge, our breakdown recovery can move it first.

Locking nut key: look in the glovebox or the spare wheel well. If your wheels have locking nuts, the fitter can't remove them without it.

Worn tread and wet Pennine weather

Roads west of Barnsley climb quickly into the hills, where rain, standing water and winter frost are common. A tyre with little tread left clears water poorly and loses grip, and worn tyres also pick up punctures more easily because there's less rubber between a sharp stone and the casing. The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, but grip falls away well before that. Check your tread before winter, and if a tyre looks low or has a nail in it, have it sorted before you head over the tops. Our guide on whether a tyre with a nail or screw can be repaired explains when a repair is possible.

What we'll ask you on the phone

  1. Where you are: road name, motorway junction and direction, village or a what3words reference.
  2. What the tyre looks like: flat, torn, bulging, or just a warning light.
  3. The size from the sidewall, or your registration.
  4. Whether you're safely off the road.
