Tyre failed in Wakefield? We're on the phone 24/7
Wakefield is ringed by motorway. The M1 runs down its western side with junctions 39 at Durkar, 40 near Ossett and 41 at Carr Gate, and the Lofthouse interchange to the north is where it meets the M62. The A61 links the city with Leeds and Barnsley, the A638 runs towards Dewsbury and Doncaster, and the A642 crosses from Huddersfield to the east. That's a lot of fast, heavy traffic, and a lot of places to be caught out by a puncture or a blowout.
Call us whenever it happens. The line is open around the clock, every day, and we send the closest fitter who's free with a replacement tyre and the tools to fit it at the roadside, at work or at home. We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases; traffic, location and time all play a part, and we'll give you a straight estimate.
Protecting yourself on the M1, M62 and A roads
- Motorways: steer onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area and turn the hazards on. Leave by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier, up the bank if possible. From an emergency area, ring National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you've stopped in a live lane and it isn't safe to get out, stay in the car with your belt on and hazards flashing, and call 999.
- A61, A638 and A642: busy routes in and out of the city. Slow down gradually, signal, and pull into a side road, lay-by or forecourt instead of the carriageway.
- Housing estates and town streets: park clear of junctions and bus stops and wait somewhere away from passing traffic.

Sorted at the roadside where possible
The fitter assesses the tyre first. A small puncture, under 6 mm and in the central three-quarters of the tread, can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance as long as the tyre hasn't been run flat. If not, a new tyre is fitted on the spot, in a premium, mid-range or budget brand with the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and taking away the old tyre are included free.
Where the car can't safely be worked on, perhaps on a slip road or with a damaged wheel, we can arrange breakdown recovery.
Don't forget the locking nut key: without it, a wheel with locking nuts can't be taken off. Check the glovebox and the boot while you wait.
Why it's worth stopping straight away
It's tempting, with the services or your exit only a few miles off, to keep going on a tyre that's going down. On the M1 between Durkar and Lofthouse that's a gamble. A tyre running low on air flexes, heats up and breaks down inside, and after a short distance even a small, repairable nail hole can turn into a tyre that has to be thrown away. Carry on further and the rim can be damaged too, adding to the cost. If the car starts to pull, the steering feels heavy or the pressure warning lights up, get off the road at the first safe place and call us. A slow puncture often gives a few days' warning first; our guide to slow puncture signs lists what to look for.
