A flat tyre in Leeds, day or night

Leeds is wrapped in fast roads. The M621 loops into the city from the M1 and M62, the A6120 outer ring road carries traffic round the northern suburbs, and the A64, A58 and A61 run out towards York, Wetherby and Harrogate. That much traffic means plenty of tyres giving up at awkward moments: a blowout on the M621 at the end of a night shift, a flat discovered on a Headingley side street on a Sunday morning, or a pressure warning on the ring road near Moortown in the rush hour.

Ring us whenever it happens. The phone is answered around the clock, seven days a week, and we send the nearest free fitter with a replacement tyre and the tools to fit it where you've stopped. We aim to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases, though motorway congestion and the time of day can change that, and we'll give you a realistic estimate on the call.

Waiting safely on Leeds roads

Where you stop matters more than how quickly the tyre gets changed. Think about which kind of road you're on:

  • M1, M62 and M621: get onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area if you can reach one. Put the hazard lights on, climb out through the passenger-side doors and stand behind the barrier, away from the traffic. From an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If the car has stopped in a live lane and you can't get out safely, stay belted in with hazards on and dial 999. Leave the wheel alone; a hard shoulder is no place to change it.
  • Ring road and radial dual carriageways: the A6120, A64 and A58 move quickly. Ease off, indicate and turn into the next side road, lay-by or petrol forecourt rather than stopping on the carriageway.
  • Terraced streets and city-centre roads: pull up clear of junctions, bus lanes and loading bays, and on a slope set the handbrake hard with the wheels turned to the kerb.

Our guide to a flat on the motorway goes through the steps in more detail.

Sorting it out where the car stands

When the fitter arrives they'll check the damage first. A nail or screw in the central three-quarters of the tread, under 6 mm and on a tyre that hasn't been run flat, can usually be repaired to British Standard guidance. A torn sidewall, a bulge or a tyre that has been driven on flat needs replacing, and the fitter can do that there and then with a premium, mid-range or budget tyre carrying the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and taking the old tyre away cost nothing extra.

Sometimes the car simply can't be worked on where it is, such as a tight slip road or a wheel that's buckled. In that case we can arrange breakdown recovery to move it somewhere safe first.

Find the locking nut key now: it's often tucked in the glovebox, the door pocket or under the boot floor with the jack. If the car has locking wheel nuts and the key is missing, tell us when you call.

Why Leeds tyres let go after dark

A lot of the city's traffic is commuters and delivery drivers doing long days on the motorway network, then finishing on the patched-up streets of the inner suburbs. A slow leak picked up on the M62 in the morning can be flat by the time you park in Armley or Chapel Allerton that evening, and you won't always spot it until the next day. If the car has been pulling to one side or a tyre keeps looking soft, our article on slow puncture signs explains what to watch for. When it finally goes outside garage hours, that's the call we're set up to take.

Districts and roads we reach

We come out across the whole city: Kirkstall, Beeston, Holbeck, Chapel Allerton, Moortown, Crossgates, Seacroft, Halton, Belle Isle and the rest of the inner and outer suburbs. Fitters also cover the M621 along its full length, the M1 and M62 near the Lofthouse interchange, the A6120, A64, A58, A61 and A660. Neighbouring places with their own pages include Horsforth, Morley and Wetherby.

Useful details for the call

  1. Your location: street name, motorway and junction number, nearest marker post, or a what3words reference.
  2. What you can see: flat, shredded, bulging, or only a warning light so far.
  3. The tyre size printed on the sidewall, such as 205/55 R16, or the registration if you can't read it.
  4. Whether you're off the road and somewhere safe to wait.
