Flat or blowout in Nottingham? We take calls through the night
Nottingham is fed by three separate links to the M1: the A453 out to junction 24, the A52 to junction 25 and the A610 to junction 26. Add the ring road, the trams sharing streets with cars and plenty of people coming and going at all hours, and you get tyres failing at all hours too. If yours has gone, whether it's a burst on Clifton Boulevard or a soft tyre outside a house in Sherwood at six in the morning, phone us. We're available 24/7 and send the closest free fitter, who brings a new tyre and fits it where the car is.
We aim to get to you within 60 minutes in most cases. Exact timings depend on your location and how busy the roads are, and we'll be honest about it on the phone.
Getting out of harm's way on Nottingham's fast roads
Before thinking about the tyre, think about where you've stopped.
- On the M1 near the city: use the hard shoulder, or an emergency area if that section has none. Hazards on, everyone out by the left-hand doors, and wait behind the barrier as far from the carriageway as you can. From an emergency area, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you're stranded in a live lane and can't safely leave the car, keep your belt on and call 999.
- On the A52, A453 or A610: these carry fast through traffic. Slow down steadily and leave at the next junction or a lay-by instead of stopping on a narrow verge.
- On the ring road or in the city centre: turn into a side street or car park as soon as you can, staying clear of tram tracks, bus lanes and junctions.
Our step-by-step motorway guide covers the motorway part in more detail.
Fixing it on the spot, or moving the car
The fitter decides between repair and replacement after a proper look. A small puncture, under 6 mm and inside the central three-quarters of the tread, can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance if the tyre hasn't been driven on flat. Anything worse gets a new tyre there and then, from budget to premium, with the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and disposal of the damaged tyre are included free.
If the car has stopped somewhere a fitter can't work safely, or the wheel is cracked, our recovery service can take it to a safer spot.
One thing to check: if your wheels have locking nuts, the fitter needs the key. It's normally kept in the glovebox or in the boot with the jack, so dig it out while you're waiting.
Pressure warnings and low-profile tyres
Plenty of cars in and around Nottingham run on low-profile tyres, and those lose pressure quickly after a hard hit on a pothole or a kerb. Many newer models also have no spare at all, just an inflation kit that won't cope with a sidewall split. If the tyre pressure light comes on while you're driving, slow down and check the tyres as soon as it's safe. Our explainer on what the tyre pressure warning light means helps you decide whether to keep going gently or stop and call.
Parts of Nottingham and the suburbs we reach
We cover the city centre and districts such as Sherwood, Bulwell, Basford, Mapperley, Carlton, Clifton, Wollaton, Lenton and the Meadows, and out along the A52 to Gamston. Our fitters attend the M1 between junctions 24 and 26, the A52, the A453, the A610 and the ring road. Nearby places with their own pages include West Bridgford, Beeston and Hucknall.
When you call, tell us
- Where the car is: street, postcode, motorway junction and direction, or a what3words location.
- What has happened to the tyre and whether the wheel looks damaged.
- The size from the tyre sidewall, or your number plate if you can't get to it.
- If you're somewhere safe, or still close to moving traffic.
