Two Centres, One Steep Hill: Tyres in Caterham
Caterham is really two places. Caterham Valley, with the station and the main shops, sits low down, while Caterham on the Hill, the older settlement, is up on the ridge to the west. Getting between them means a climb, and getting anywhere else usually means the A22. Head north and it takes you through Whyteleafe and Kenley towards Croydon; head south along the bypass and you reach junction 6 of the M25 at Godstone in about two miles.
With roads like that, a flat tyre is more than an inconvenience. It can leave you stuck on a slope, or on a fast stretch of dual carriageway with nowhere easy to stop. We send a mobile fitter to you instead, at any hour of the day or night, every day of the week. In most cases we aim to be there within 60 minutes, depending on your location and the traffic on the A22.
Most of our work here happens on driveways and residential roads, where a tyre has gone flat overnight or a warning light came on during the drive home. The fitter works beside the car, so you do not have to move it at all.
What Happens After You Ring
- You tell us what has happened. Where the car is, what the tyre looks like and, if possible, the size printed on its side.
- A fitter heads your way. We have a network of more than 100 mobile fitters across England and Wales, so the job goes to whoever is nearest.
- The tyre is dealt with on the spot. Repaired if it is safe to, replaced if not. Balancing and old-tyre disposal are free.
- You pay when it is done. Card, cash or bank transfer, at a competitive price with no hidden fees.
Services for Caterham and East Surrey
- Mobile tyre fitting: premium, mid-range or budget tyres fitted at home, all with the manufacturer's guarantee.
- Puncture repair: a nail or screw in the main part of the tread can usually be repaired, saving the cost of a new tyre.
- Van tyres: for local trades whose working day starts with a run up the A22 or round the M25.
- Breakdown recovery: when the wheel is damaged beyond a simple tyre change, or the car is somewhere it cannot safely be worked on.
Whyteleafe, Chaldon, Warlingham and the North Downs Villages
Our fitters cover Caterham Valley and Caterham on the Hill, plus the villages around them: Whyteleafe and Kenley to the north, Warlingham to the north-east, Chaldon to the west and Old Coulsdon over the hill. Further out, we reach Godstone and Bletchingley. The A22, its bypass section and the M25 around junction 6 are all part of our area.
Nearby towns we also cover include Croydon, Redhill and East Grinstead.
Icy Mornings on the Downs: Think About Your Tyres
Caterham is up on the North Downs, and the climb between the valley and the hill can be slippery on frosty mornings when roads lower down are clear. Standard summer tyres harden in the cold and lose grip, which is when cars start to struggle on gradients.
If you drive these slopes through the winter, consider all-season or winter tyres. They use a softer compound and more grooves to stay grippy below about 7°C. Whatever you run, keep plenty of tread, since worn tyres are the first to slide. Pull away gently in second gear on icy hills, and leave far more room than usual for stopping.
