Emergency tyre help anywhere in Birmingham

Birmingham never quite stops driving. Taxis and delivery vans run through the night, shift workers head home at 2am, and the M6 through Spaghetti Junction is busy at almost any hour. So a puncture or a blowout here can just as easily happen at midnight on the Middleway as at teatime on a terraced street in Small Heath. Ring us whenever it happens. We answer 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and send the nearest available fitter with a suitable tyre and the gear to fit it at the kerb.

We aim to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases, but city traffic, roadworks and the time of day all affect that. We'll give you a fair estimate on the call.

Getting off the M6, the expressway and out of the tunnels

  • M6 from junction 4 to junction 10a: this whole stretch is smart motorway. Use the hard shoulder if one is open to you, otherwise an emergency area, or leave at the next junction if the car can get there slowly. Hazards on, out by the left-hand doors, and stand behind the barrier. Call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 from an emergency area or if you're stuck in a live lane. If getting out isn't safe, stay in the car with your seatbelt on and the hazards on, and dial 999.
  • A38(M) Aston Expressway: there's little room to stop. If the car is still moving, carry on carefully to the end and pull off onto a side road.
  • Queensway tunnels: keep going slowly until you're out if you possibly can. If the car stops inside, put the hazards on, switch off the engine, get out and use the nearest emergency point to call for help.
  • Radial roads like the A34, A38 and A45: turn off into a side street or a car park instead of stopping in a bus lane or at a junction.

A warning light, a soft tyre and a busy city

Not every Birmingham emergency starts with a bang. Often it's the tyre pressure light coming on halfway along the Hagley Road, with no obvious sign of trouble. Don't ignore it and carry on across the city. Stop somewhere safe, look at each tyre, and if one is clearly low, stay put and call us. Our article on the tyre pressure warning light explains what the different warnings mean.

On a residents' street with cars parked nose to tail, don't worry about space. The fitter can usually work beside the car where it is, and if the flat wheel is right against the kerb we'll talk through options when you call.

What happens at the kerbside

The fitter looks at the damage first. A clean puncture in the central three-quarters of the tread, under 6 mm, on a tyre that hasn't been driven flat, can usually be repaired to British Standard guidance. Anything worse, such as a cut sidewall, a bulge or a tyre ruined by driving on it flat, means a new one fitted there and then. We have premium, mid-range and budget tyres, each with the manufacturer's guarantee, and balancing and old-tyre disposal are included free.

If it isn't safe to work where the car is, such as a smart motorway emergency area or a tunnel approach, our breakdown recovery moves it first.

Locking nut adaptor: check the glovebox, door bins and the spare wheel well for it before the fitter turns up. If it's missing, tell us when you call.

Telling us where you've stopped

  1. A postcode, street name, or the motorway junction and direction of travel.
  2. If you're unsure, a what3words reference or a location pin on WhatsApp.
  3. The tyre size from the sidewall, for example 195/65 R15, or your reg.
  4. What went wrong and whether everyone is somewhere safe.
