Alton is a market town in East Hampshire set right alongside the A31. That road is a national-speed dual carriageway here, running west over the high ground through Four Marks towards Winchester and the M3, and east towards Farnham and Guildford. The A339 leaves the A31 south of the town and heads north-west to Basingstoke. If you hit one hard, pull over when it's safe and look at the tyre. A bulge, a split, or a steering wheel that now pulls or shakes are all signs something has been damaged. Don't carry on for miles hoping it settles down; a damaged sidewall can fail suddenly. Keeping tyres at the right pressure also helps, because an under-inflated tyre is much easier to pinch against the rim.
