Roadside Tyre Fitting on the West Cumbrian Coast
Workington is where three of west Cumbria's main roads meet. The A596 heads north to Maryport, about five miles up the coast, the A597 runs south towards Whitehaven, and the A66 sets off east to Cockermouth, seven miles away, then on past Keswick to the M6. The A595 links the coastal towns too, so a lot of people here drive between towns for work every day.
When a tyre goes on one of those trips, or you find it flat on the drive, we'll come to you. The fitter carries a replacement tyre and the equipment to fit it, so the job is done on your street, at your workplace or in a safe spot at the roadside. Phone lines are open around the clock, and for most jobs we aim to arrive within an hour, depending on location and traffic.
Being on the coast, Workington is a fair drive from the bigger towns inland, so waiting for a tyre to be ordered in or driving an hour on a space-saver isn't much fun. Having the work done where you are saves that trip, and it means you're not left wondering whether a damaged tyre will make it as far as Cockermouth or Carlisle.

Estates, Villages and Neighbouring Towns
Our fitters cover Northside, Seaton, Moorclose, Salterbeck and Harrington on the southern edge of town, as well as the centre. We also work along the A66, A595, A596 and A597, and travel out to Maryport and Cockermouth.
Down the coast is Whitehaven, and inland we cover Carlisle to the north-east and Penrith at the far end of the A66.
Try the 20p Test on Your Tread
The legal minimum tread depth for cars in the UK is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round. Grip in the wet drops off well before that, though, and coastal weather brings a lot of wet days.
A quick way to check is to push a 20p coin into the main grooves. If the outer band of the coin is hidden, there's a reasonable amount of tread left. If you can see the band, the tyre is close to the limit and worth replacing soon. Try it in several places on each tyre, because uneven wear on one edge is common and can also mean the wheel alignment needs looking at.
When you replace worn tyres, it's generally best to put the newer pair on the rear axle, as that helps keep the back of the car stable if you have to brake or swerve on a wet road. The fitter can advise when they arrive.
